Toyota Probox engines

The Probox, the successor to the Corolla Van, is a station wagon that comes with 1.3 and 1.5 liter petrol units.

Modifications

The first Probox, which appeared on sale in 2002, was produced in two versions and was equipped with both front and all-wheel drive.

The first generation Probox was equipped with three power units. The base engine of the 1.3-liter model, with the factory index 2NZ-FE, had a power of 88 hp. and 121 Nm of torque.

The next was the 1NZ-FE 1.5 liter engine. This installation had a capacity of 103 liters. With. and torque - 132 Nm.

The turbodiesel power unit with a volume of 1,4 liters - 1ND-TV, developed a power of 75 liters on the Probox. With. and gave out 170 Nm of torque.

The first generation car was offered with a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed gearbox, except for cars equipped with 1ND-TV engines, which were equipped with only a 5-speed “mechanics” paired with 2NZ / 1NZ-FE engines.

The DX-J trim, which was discontinued in 2005, was equipped with a 1.3-liter unit only. Since 2007, sales of vehicles with 1ND-TV diesel units have been cancelled.

In 2010, the 1.5-liter engine was modified and became more economical. In 2014, the model was restyled. The car retained the old power units - 1.3- and 1.5-liter engines with a capacity of 95 and 103 hp, but they were also modified.

Unlike the units, the transmission was completely replaced with a new one, and a continuously variable variator came with all the motors. Toyota Probox is still in production.

1NZ-FE/FXE (105, 109/74 HP)

Power units of the NZ line began to be produced in 1999. In terms of their parameters, NZ engines are very similar to more serious installations of the ZZ family - the same non-repairable aluminum alloy block, intake VVT-i system, single-row timing chain, and so on. Hydraulic lifters on 1NZ appeared only in 2004.

1ND-TV (72 HP)

The unpretentious 4ND-TV SOHC 1-cylinder diesel unit is one of Toyota's most successful small-displacement engines, having lasted on the assembly line for more than a decade. Despite the moderate power index, the motor is durable and can take care of up to half a million kilometers.

2NZ-FE (87 HP)

The 2NZ-FE power unit is an exact copy of the older 1NZ-FE ICE, but with a crankshaft stroke reduced to 73.5 mm. Under the small knee, the parameters of the 2NZ cylinder block were also reduced, as well as the ShPG, and a working volume of 1.3 liters was obtained. Otherwise, they are exactly the same engines.

In 2008, the first unit with the 1NR-FE index was produced, equipped with a start-stop system. For the development of the engine, modern technologies and materials were used, which made it possible to reduce the amount of emissions of harmful substances.

Typical engine malfunctions and their causes

  • High oil consumption and extraneous noise are the main problems of NZ engines. Usually, a serious “oil burner” and unnatural sounds begin in them after a run of 150-200 thousand km. In the first case, decarbonization or replacement of caps with oil scraper rings helps. The second problem is usually solved by installing a new timing chain.

Floating speeds are symptoms of a dirty throttle body or idle valve. Engine whistle is usually caused by a worn alternator belt. BC 1NZ-FE, unfortunately, cannot be repaired.

  • Considering the status of one of the best small-displacement diesel engines in the world, the 1ND-TV has practically no problems. The engine is extremely simple and maintainable, however, it also has its weak points.

Potential problems, primarily dependent on the quality of the oil, are “oil burner” and failure of the turbocharger. Poor hot starting is solved by cleaning the fuel supply system.

If 1ND-TV does not start in cold weather, there are most likely problems with the Common Rail system.

  • Floating idle speed 2NZ-FE are symptoms of contamination of the OBD or KXX. Engine whine is usually caused by a worn alternator belt, and increased vibration usually indicates the need to replace the fuel filter and / or the front engine mount.

In addition to the problems indicated, on 2NZ-FE engines, the oil pressure sensor often fails and the crankshaft rear oil seal leaks. BC 2NZ-FE, unfortunately, is not repairable.

  • The 1NR-FE cylinder block is made of aluminum and, therefore, is also not repairable. There are a few more "weaknesses" in these engines.

A dirty EGR valve usually results in "oil burn" and contributes to the formation of carbon deposits on the cylinders. There are also issues with a leaking pump, rattling noise in VVT-i clutches, and ignition coils that have too short a lifespan.

Conclusion

Toyota Probox is not officially supplied to Russia, only privately, which is why it is most widely used in Siberia and the Far East, of course, in the right-hand drive version.
