Toyota Wish engines

Toyota Wish is a family minivan produced in two generations. Standard equipment includes 2ZR-FAE, 3ZR-FAE, 1ZZ-FE series gasoline engines, on later models - 1AZ-FSE. Manual transmission was not installed, only automatic transmission. Toyota Wish is a car with both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. A passable, reliable, relatively inexpensive car to maintain, which received a large number of positive reviews.

Description of the Toyota Wish model

The release of Toyota Wish began on January 20, 2003, but was first introduced in 2002. As chief design engineer Takeshi Yoshida stated, Wish was a continuation of the early version of the Toyota Corolla, the main working units were taken from it.

Wish went on sale gradually in many countries, starting with Japan, and further: Taiwan, Thailand, etc. In different countries, the equipment of the car changed, for example, in Thailand the car did not receive tinted windows, but the overall suspension design remained. For Taiwan, some body elements were radically revised by the manufacturer: taillights, a bumper, and the car also received several new chrome-plated parts.

The release of the first generation ceased in 2005, and a few months later the Toyota Wish model reappeared on the market, but only after restyling. There were no special design changes, the equipment and some body parts changed a little. The release of the first generation restyling continued until 2009.

The second generation of the "minivan" was released in an updated body with upgraded engines of various sizes and capacities (2ZR-FAE and 3ZR-FAE), as well as front and all-wheel drive. Wish received larger dimensions, but inside it remained a spacious and comfortable car, perfectly suited to the category of a family car.

Restyling of the second generation appeared on the market in 2012. "Minivan" was changed not only outside, but also inside.

The technology of that time made it possible to achieve greater efficiency and reduce fuel consumption. The manufacturer's bias was made towards safety, and the car received ABS systems with EBD and Brake Assist. As well as several nice and convenient bonuses: parking sensors and stability control.

Table of technical characteristics of Toyota Wish engines

Depending on the generation and restyling, Toyota Wish was equipped with gasoline engines of various sizes: 1ZZ-FE, 1AZ-FSE, 2ZR-FAE and 3ZR-FAE. These motors have established themselves as reliable and high-quality units with a long service life. The maintainability of such internal combustion engines is within the average cost.

As can be seen from the table, Toyota Wish engines have undergone minor changes throughout the entire production period, for example, displacement differences (1AZ-FSE and 3ZR-FAE compared to 1ZZ-FE and 2ZR-FAE). The rest of the speed and power indicators remained without major changes.

1ZZ-FE - first generation engine

The first generation of Toyota Wish was dominated by the 1ZZ-FE unit, which was also installed on the Pontiac Vibe, Toyota Allion and Toyota Caldina, etc. There is no need to list all models in full, since this motor is very popular and has earned a positive rating for its trouble-free operation, reliability and low maintainability costs.

The main problem with this unit was noticed during its production from 2005 to 2008. The malfunction was not in the unit itself, but in its control module, due to which the engine could suddenly stall, but arbitrary gear shifts were also noticed. The 1ZZ-FE defect led to the recall of two car models from the market: Toyota Corolla and Pontiac Vibe.

The motor housing is made of high-quality aluminum, which is practically not solderable, for example, when the crankcase is defrosted. The use of aluminum made it possible to reduce the weight of the internal combustion engine, while the power characteristics remained at a high level.

The advantage of 1ZZ-FE is that during the overhaul, cylinder boring is not required, since cast-iron liners are installed in the unit and it is enough just to replace them.

Popular faults 1ZZ-FE:

  • Increased oil consumption that awaits all 1ZZ-FE models produced before 2005. Not sufficiently wear-resistant oil scraper rings begin to leak oil after 150000 km, and therefore require replacement. After replacing the worn rings, the problem disappears.
  • The appearance of a rustling noise. Also awaits all owners of 1ZZ-FE after 150000 km. Reason: stretched timing chain. It is recommended to replace it immediately.
  • Increased vibration is the most unpleasant and incomprehensible problem of 1ZZ-FE series engines. And not always the cause of this phenomenon are engine mounts.

The resource of this motor is unusually small and averages 200000 km. You should carefully monitor the temperature of the engine, since after overheating, the crankcase cannot be restored.

2ZR-FAE - second generation engine

The second generation was equipped with ICE 2ZR-FAE, less often - 3ZR-FAE. The 2ZR-FAE modification differs from the basic 2ZR configuration in a unique Valvematic gas distribution system, as well as an increased compression ratio and increased engine power by 7 hp.

Frequent malfunctions of the 2ZR line:

  • Increased oil consumption. Not associated with any design features. Often the problem was solved by filling in oil of increased viscosity, for example, W30.
  • The appearance of unpleasant noise and knocking. Both the timing chain tensioner and the loosened alternator belt may be to blame for this, but this is less common.
  • The average operating life of the pump is 50000-70000 km, and the thermostat often fails on the same run.

The 2ZR-FAE unit turned out to be more acceptable and successful than the 1ZZ-FE. Its average mileage is 250000 km, after which a major overhaul is required. But some motorists, to the detriment of the engine resource, carry out its turbocharging. Raising the engine power will not be a problem, there is a ready-made kit for free sale: a turbine, a manifold, injectors, a filter and a pump. You just need to purchase all the elements and install on the car.

The highest quality model - 3ZR-FAE

The 3ZR became a popular unit due to its modification (3ZR-FBE), after which the unit could run on biofuel without a drop in power characteristics. Of all the engines (with the exception of the 1AZ-FSE) installed on Toyota Wish cars, the 3ZR-FAE was distinguished by its large volume - 1986 cm3. At the same time, the engine belongs to the category of economical units - the average fuel consumption is within 7 liters of gasoline per 100 km.

Modification 3ZR-FAE also received an increase in power by 12 hp. This engine has affordable prices for component parts and spare parts, as well as consumables. For example, inexpensive semi-synthetic and synthetic oils, from 3W-0 to 20W-10, can be poured into the 30ZR-FAE oil system. Gasoline should only be used with an octane rating of 95 and preferably from reliable manufacturers.

According to numerous reviews, the 3ZR-FAE resource is more than 250000 km, but even the manufacturer himself claims that the figure is too high. The motor is produced to this day, gradually gaining an increasing number of fans. In addition to Toyota Wish, the engine was also installed on cars: Toyota Avensis, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Premio and Toyota RAV4.

Tuning of this internal combustion engine is allowed, but only in alteration for a turbocharged version.
