Volkswagen Caravelle engines
A minibus is a very special invention of automotive designers. It is roomy, comfortable and fast. This is an ideal business transfer option so that the host does not rack their brains looking for several limousines at the same time. One of the most popular passenger-and-freight minivans on the roads of Europe at the turn of the century was the Volkswagen Caravelle.
History of the model
The Caravelle minibus entered the roads of Europe in 1979 as a rear-wheel drive minivan with a power plant located in the rear of the body. In 1997, the designers proposed to increase the hood in order to place the engine in it. There was so much room in front that, in addition to the in-line fours, it was now possible to use massive V-shaped six-cylinder diesel engines.
The Volkswagen Caravelle production line is as follows:
- 3rd generation (T3) - 1979-1990;
- 4rd generation (T4) - 1991-2003;
- 5rd generation (T5) - 2004-2009;
- 6th generation (T6) - 2010-present (restyling T6 - 2015).
The very first engine that was installed in a minivan was a diesel engine with factory code AAB with a capacity of 78 hp. (working volume - 2370 cm3).
The next generation of Caravelle echoes the Transporter: front-wheel drive vans with ABS, airbags, electrically heated mirrors and windows, disc brakes, a heat exchanger with a control unit and an air duct system. The power plants were equipped with diesel and gasoline engines, which made it possible to reach speeds of 150-200 km / h. Even then, engineers and designers began to pay a lot of attention to ensuring comfort during travel and interior decoration: a transforming table was installed inside, a stove with a timer, and a modern car radio appeared.
The fifth generation of the minibus very much resembles another premium edition of VW - Multivan: a bumper that matches the color of the body color, headlights that perfectly match the shape. But the main "highlight" of the updated modification of the minibus was the ability to use the 4Motion all-wheel drive, as well as the choice of a long or short base. Inside the cabin, it became even more spacious and comfortable, since now the dual-zone Climatronic air conditioning system was responsible for climate control.
Ergonomics and spaciousness of the cabin - this is the main trump card of the new version of the minivan. The new Caravelle accommodates 4 to 9 passengers with light hand luggage. The T6 is available in standard and long wheelbase versions. In addition to a modern audio system, engineers equipped the minivan with a large number of assistant systems, a DSG gearbox, and an adaptive DCC chassis. The maximum power of the diesel power plant is 204 hp.
Engines for Volkswagen Caravelle
Cars of generations T4 and T5 were equipped with a large number of engines for front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive schemes. Suffice it to say that some of the Caravelle managed to ride with ancient 1X engines without direct injection - in-line diesel "fours" with a capacity of only 60 hp.
Since 2015, the Caravelle and California brands have been “going in one team” in terms of equipping power plants: they have exactly the same 2,0 and 2,5-liter diesel and gasoline engines with turbines or compressors as superchargers.
Biturbodiesel with a capacity of 204 hp with the factory code CXEB also made it to this list: it is installed on a front-wheel drive minibus with a robotic gearbox. The most powerful engine that got under the hood of the Volkswagen Caravelle was the BDL gasoline engine with a distributed fuel injection system. Without a turbine, this monster V6 with a working volume of 3189 cm3 was able to develop an unprecedented power for a minibus - 235 hp.

This is surprising, but relatively "quiet" motors of multivans with modest characteristics are frequent guests in chip tuning laboratories. For example, for the BDL engine, a gas pedal control unit was developed through a smartphone program (Pedal box). Standard settings 3,2 V6 BDL are brought to the following indicators:
- reduction of acceleration time to 70 km / h by 0,2-0,5 s;
- no delay when pressing the gas pedal;
- reducing the drop in speed when shifting gears on a manual gearbox.
The speed performance improvement scheme is available for any type of gearbox that is installed on the Volkswagen Caravelle. Pedal box provides instant response of the system to the actions of the driver, improves the curve, which displays the speed of reaction of the power plant to the driver's changes in the parameters of the gas pedal.
