Electrical innovation: Samsung unveils battery that charges in just 20 minutes

Samsung took advantage of its presence at the famous "North American International Auto Show", which was held in the United States, more specifically in Detroit, to present its new find. This is nothing more than a prototype of a new generation battery that provides an autonomy of 600 km and can be charged in just 20 minutes.

Great progress in the field of electricity

Autonomy and charging time are some of the major barriers to buying modern electric vehicles. But with a new battery offered by Samsung on the occasion of the North American International Auto Show, that could change pretty quickly. And in vain? This new generation of batteries offered by Samsung not only provides a range of up to 600 km for electric vehicles, but also charges in just 20 minutes. The charge, of course, is not full, but, nevertheless, it allows you to restore about 80% of the total battery capacity, that is, almost 500 kilometers.

A great promise, which suggests that a break of about 20 minutes in the highway rest area will be more than enough to recharge the battery and start driving again for a few more kilometers. This capability will easily eliminate the fear of range often generated by electric vehicle drivers.

Serial production is only scheduled for 2021.

And if motorists are already very enthusiastic about the promises of this battery, you should know that the production of this technology gem will not officially begin until early 2021. In addition to the battery, Samsung has also taken advantage of this opportunity. Introduce a completely new "cylindrical lithium-ion battery" format called "2170". This is due, in part, to its 21 mm diameter and 70 mm length. This highly practical "cylindrical lithium-ion cell" can hold up to 24 cells, up from 12 for the current standard battery module.

This innovation in terms of format also allows the use of a module of the same dimensions from: 2-3 kWh to 6-8 kWh. However, it should be noted that this 2170 format has already been adopted by Tesla and Panasonic as well. In their case, mass production of this cell has already begun at their giant Gigafactory, set in the Nevada desert.
