Although V-blocks are one of the most effective holding tools for supporting a cylindrical workpiece, there are several alternative methods that can be used.
Scroll chuck
A lathe chuck mounted on the machine table can be used to hold round or irregular workpieces. The jaws of the chuck work together to secure the part to the machine.
Collet and collet block
If you are using a horizontal milling machine, you can use a collet with a collet block to grip a round workpiece. The mechanical holding force of the collet is distributed over the entire part, so the workpiece is held very securely, resulting in precise machining.
Self-centering vise
Self-centering vise can be used on a milling machine or drilling machine to hold shafts and round workpieces. Its V-shaped jaws help hold cylindrical parts securely in place.
Universal vice
The movable jaw of the universal vice has a vertical V-groove for holding round workpieces.
Standard Vise
If more than half of the workpiece is below the center line of the fixed jaw, a standard vise can be used to hold cylindrical parts. However, this is only effective for small workpieces.
