Riding a motorcycle around town: Duffy's advice

La city motorcycle driving requires some adaptation and a lot of attention from the bikers. Indeed, motorists do not take into account two wheels or very little, so we bikers have to adapt to driving safely, especially in cities with more dense traffic. Duffy gives you some tips on how to ride your motorcycle confidently and safely around town.

Tip # 1: get visible on the bike

A very important point in the city, but also in other places, is to constantly look around. It is also necessary to do everything possible to make motorists visible at best: mandatory low beams and a reflective sticker attached to the helmet. For those who live in cities with very high traffic, it is preferable to choose visible clothing (out of black). Finally, in bad weather, it is recommended to wear a vest or a yellow armband.

Tip # 2: Anticipate

Maintain a safe distance and adjust your speed, you are not immune from a braking car, a pedestrian crossing, a door that opens onto a sidewalk, or even a priority rejection. Keep your fingers close to the brake lever, you are often not seen and mirrors are used too little by motorists.

Tip # 3: Ride your motorcycle safely between queues.

If you're worried about the experimenting phase with interfile traffic in the Ile-de-France, Bouches-du-Rhone, Gironde and Rhone, make sure at least one of the two motorists passing by sees you. Pay attention to others bikers, some arrive quickly, are relatively “hurried” and dangerous. Likewise, some motorists change lanes without looking too hard. Obey the rules for driving on interlane lanes, under penalty of a fine.

Tip 4. Beware of buses and trucks

Following a bus or truck, they hide all visibility, it is almost impossible to know what is happening in front of them. Consider the environment before driving past a bus or camper that has stopped in line. A pedestrian can cross the road in front of a bus, a courier can ignore the crossing or even leave. Keep in mind that these vehicles have many blind spots, so you are unlikely to ever be seen, so it's up to you how to keep yourself safe.

La the movement of motorcycles in the city requires increased concentration, always value the environment and the vehicles around you before making a decision. Finally, always remember that there are many more dangers in the city: traffic, pedestrians, intersections ...
