Fiat Grande Punto 1.4 16v dynamic

Grande Punto is a new car. It is larger than its predecessor, more modern, more spacious and more advanced in many ways. He may not show it from the outside, but he is clearly visible from the inside. Along with the external dimensions, the passenger compartment has also increased, making it now even easier to accommodate five adults. If necessary!

New, more mature features have appeared on the dashboard. The materials on it are of higher quality, and the final products are more accurate. The driver's working space has also been significantly improved. The seat and steering wheel are widely adjustable and allow for really good adjustment according to the wishes of each person. Among other things, the Dynamic equipment offers an electrically adjustable lumbar support, and the Grande Punto inherits from its predecessor a two-stage power steering, which further facilitates the rotation of the ring in the City program. Although, in all honesty, I would not need it.

The servo basically does its job quite well. The new Punto is also one of the few that already offers a trip computer, headlights with "follow me home" function, power windows, height and depth adjustable steering wheel, height-adjustable driver's seat, airbags for driver and front passenger, ABS and EBD, and for the smallest - isofix mounts and a removable front passenger airbag. This is an even more unreasonable backward step taken by Fiat by offering petrol engines.

It starts with a 1-liter "eight-valve" engine that can produce four kilowatts more than its predecessor, continues with a 2-liter eight-valve engine and ends with an identical displacement engine with four valves per cylinder. Very sad

when compared with the offer of diesel engines (1.3 and 1.9 Multijet). Even sadder for us was the realization of what the most powerful "gas lover" is actually capable of. The plant claims a capacity of 70 kilowatts (95 hp) and 128 Nm, which is a lot.

Even for £ 1000 Grande Punta. In addition, the engine is equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, which with a shorter differential should provide more agility compared to the Grande Punto with the 1.4 8V engine and the five-speed gearbox that comes with it. However, our measurements showed that the number of jumps was only one shade higher. Acceleration from the city to a speed of 100 kilometers per hour is better by one and a half seconds.

Almost the same time difference persists after the first kilometer, which the more powerful Grande Punto overcomes in 34 seconds at an exit speed of 1 kilometer per hour, while the weaker Grande Punto takes 153 seconds at the same distance and reaches 35 kilometers at the start. departure. hour lower speed. The Grande Punto 8 10V showed the biggest disappointment in terms of flexibility. Here, the weaker brother, despite the lower power and torque and the five-speed gearbox, achieved even better results.

What our measurements showed is otherwise inconsistent with the power data reported by the manufacturer. And the truth is, we in the newsroom completely agree and admit the possibility that this sixteen-valve engine was not born under the luckiest star. The fact is that the differences in characteristics mentioned by Fiat are quite large. If true. which they state in these. According to the available data, it is true that the surcharge of 99.000 tolars we need for an additional eight valves in the head and a six-speed gearbox is not much.

evaluation

  • Judging by what our measurements showed, there is no doubt. Better take the eight-valve Grande Punta home - you'll get a more powerful car - and for 99.000 tolars, as much as you have to pay for a 16-valve, you'd better think about the extra equipment. Otherwise, it is true that for the performance promised by Fiat (if the data is correct, of course), the surcharge is not excessive.
