Volkswagen Carp 2.0 TDI Bluemotion

The Sharan was once a family minivan, along with the Espace. Then there were smaller, but still family-owned: Scenic and Grand Scenic, Touran, C-Max. ... And the Sharan class grew, only Sharan remained the same small and outdated. But now the Volkswagens have decisively solved the problem.

Sharan has grown a lot, and not a little.

It is 22 centimeters longer (only 4 meters) and 85 centimeters wide. However, it is less van and more sporty - a little lower, by 9 centimeters. The exterior is entirely in keeping with Volkswagen's current design DNA, so the nose is noticeably wide and the taillights are large.

On the outside, the Sharan is actually great at hiding its size, but it doesn't do anything behind the wheel. Already the first impression is strong: a large, wide instrument panel, a long passenger cabin in the interior rear-view mirror. Damn, is it Sharan or the Transporter?

But fear not: the space is really huge, and the Sharan is not a van. The seat is very automotive, the seat can be dropped quite low, the exterior mirrors can be larger, the steering wheel is nicely upright, and the materials and workmanship are prestigiously reminiscent of a limousine.

Of course, there are drawbacks behind the wheel: the pedals are shifted too far to the right, closer to the center of the car (the clutch pedal is almost on the middle axis of the seat), which can cause discomfort in the lower back, visibility, especially the angle, but better.

But an ordinary driver quickly gets used to such things, so there are no particular problems.

The instruments are easy on the eyes and very transparent, and the graphic display between them provides the driver (Volkswagen Classic) with all the important and less important information. The steering wheel is of course (another classic) taken care of by the buttons on the steering wheel. The thing has long been known, tested and useful - why change it.

The Sharan also boasts plenty of storage space, from drink holders to space for a cell phone, keys, including a large drawer at the top of the dashboard.

The Highline mark means better interior materials. Chrome or aluminum accessories on the dashboard, center console and steering wheel break the otherwise monotonous gray plastic, which is certainly abundant in such a large cabin. The seats were dressed in a combination of Alcantara and leather.

In this case, the air conditioner is multi-zone, as it can also be adjusted separately for the rear passengers.

Rear in this case, of course, means the second and third row of seats. The second consists of three independent longitudinally movable (160 mm) seats. It is convenient to sit on them, since they are located quite high (about six centimeters higher than, say, in the previous Sharan), and it will be pleasant for children to see from the side and forward.

Since the Sharan boasts a large internal width, three adults can easily survive on them. All three seats can be folded down to create a huge cargo space behind the front seats that can be compared to small vans after the safety net is installed.

Even when you (very simply) extend both seats in the third row, there is no room for luggage. Then the trunk is deepened, and there is still a little space for luggage. Access to the rear seats is facilitated by large sliding doors on each side, but this solution has its drawbacks.

The door does not require a lot of force to move, it is more troubling that the hook needs to be pulled out and a little back to release their mechanism, which does not fit well with the fact that the door has to be pushed forward to close.

In addition, they need to be closed to the end, which boldly slams. Since the Sharan does not have the ability to automatically close the door all the way (the last few millimeters of movement of not fully closed doors, as is possible with larger sedans), we can only heartily advise considering an electric sliding door.

The same with the trunk - there are no problems with the hook, but the door is still large and gentle female hands, electric closing (there are no problems with opening) will come in handy.

For rear seat passengers (since the bottom in front of them is deepened, there are no problems with pressing the knees to the chin and rear

sits quite comfortably) you can also pay extra for side airbags, otherwise Sharan will take good care of safety, both with standard airbags and the ESP system, and with a durable body.

Soundproofing is also present in the comfort section, and here Sharan has done well too. Even at city speeds, the rumble of a diesel engine hardly reaches the passenger compartment, and gusts of wind around the body do not interfere at higher speeds. A two-liter turbodiesel under the hood with a capacity of only 103 kilowatts or 140 "horsepower" is not the best option for racing on highways.

The speed around the Slovenian limit is relatively high, but then everything slows down noticeably - the Sharan is neither light nor small, and the large frontal surface just does its job. If at all possible, go for the more powerful, 170bhp version, especially if you know you'll be driving a loaded car multiple times.

In the Sharan test, engine power was transmitted to the wheels by a six-speed manual transmission, which has (as we are used to at Volkswagen) short and precise movements. Again: opt for DSG for more comfort, especially in a city crowd, but of course, such a choice is not necessary.

You will save very little on fuel anyway, as all Sharans are Bluemotion. This means a classic engine, so it has a start-stop system that saves fuel when you are standing still (there will be less savings when the outside cools down, as it refuses to turn off the engine if the interior is not fully warmed up or if the engine is not warmed up before working temperature), a more powerful battery that charges only when the engine is not loaded (for example, when stopped), a more powerful alternator. ...

The end result, of course, depends on driving style (the biggest savings are in the city), but Sharan's test mileage already tells you the system is working; it stopped at a little less than eight litres, which is definitely great for a limousine van that's nearly five meters long and three-quarters in weight, and a 70-litre fuel tank can handle (if you put in a little effort) a thousand miles.

But fuel economy isn't the only way the Sharan is economical: even affordable, in terms of size and usability, it's affordable enough. And when you add a chassis that's a good compromise between cornering prevention and under-wheel damping, it's clear that Volkswagen's developers have a good excuse why we've been waiting so long for the new Sharan: it can be fast, it can be kind. both together, however (except in exceptional cases) do not move.

Face to face. ...

Vinko Kernc: Do you understand how far away was February 1995? It was then that Ford and VW unveiled the Galaxy and Sharan twins together. And at the same time, both stated that after serious consideration, they deliberately equipped both with classic side doors because the slides are too fast.

The Sharan has indeed defied time in all 15 years surprisingly well, but - as it seems - not because of the doors, as in the new model they are slippery, as you can see. And the new Sharan is much more comfortable in every other way as well, including seats that no longer need to be loaded out of the car to maximize space. Only this Sharan became quite large ...

Overall rating (339/420)

  • We say that whoever waits, waits, and at Sharan we have met a wonderful, helpful and environmentally conscious successor.

  • Exterior (12/15)

As is typical for Volkswagens, a rather aggressive nose and a quieter rear end.

  • Interior (109/140)

Spacious, flexible, but without essential hardware (e.g. no bluetooth for hands-free calls).

  • Engine, transmission (53

    / 40)

An economical engine whose performance is at the limit of the vehicle's capabilities.

  • Driving performance (53

    / 95)

For leisurely urban maneuvers, the almost five-foot Sharan is already too big.

  • Performance (24/35)

With such a motorized Sharan, you won't be among the fastest, especially on the expressways.

  • Security (52/45)

Excellent passive safety and a high score in the EuroNCAP crash test, but it can help the driver.

  • Economy

Economical and not too expensive in terms of size and usability.
