Ford Mondeo Karavan 2.0 TDCi Titan X

It is very interesting when the old one stops near the new Mondeo station wagon. Only then does it become apparent how much larger the new one is. And how much larger is his trunk at first glance. This one is not quite in the upper class (it was overtaken, say, by the Passat), but it still belongs to the category of trunks in which you do not need to put your luggage? you just stick it into that. Or in other words: if you haven't overdone the length of the skis, it may happen that you put them in the trunk without knocking down a third of the back bench or using the ski hole in it.

Of course, the trunk is not everything. In the interior, this Mondeo is no worse than in the trunk. Of course, the long wheelbase means more interior space, so neither driver nor passengers will be disappointed. On the back bench, there is enough space not only for the elbows and head, but also for the knees. The length behind the wheel isn't too much of a hindrance for passengers sitting behind it, as there's plenty of room for them even when the front seats are pushed all the way back. Sitting in the middle of the rear seat is a little less comfortable, but we've gotten used to it in cars that have two slightly more pronounced outer seats in the back.

It will be difficult for you to hear what a bad word from the driver's seat of the Mondeo. Both the seat and steering wheel adjust in sufficient direction and have enough offset so that those who are about an inch shorter than average will easily find a suitable position. Are the ergonomics also high? you will not find switches that would get out of control, the only drawbacks are only the controls on the steering wheel (more precisely: how to use them) and the central information display (Convers + system).

This (completely unnecessary) takes up most of the space on the gauges, which makes the rev counter too small and opaque, and at the same time, this large color screen gives almost no useful information while driving. He has a large car radiogram all the time (and only the station it is tuned to is useful), next to it is a car chart (it can show if the light is on, if the door is open, etc.), which is correct when driving like this unnecessary, and only one on-board computer data.

The screen can be (or, in our opinion, should be) at least half the size and display much more data at the same time. And since it can be too bright even at night, even with the darkest sensors, it's better to consider Ghia X hardware instead of Titanium X hardware. You'll have to ditch the great sports seats, but that's the way it is.

The XNUMX-liter diesel under the hood is not the latest product and is in the lower end of the XNUMX-liter turbo diesel performance scale, but it is quiet, smooth, economical and quite flexible even at low revs, which may be a rarity in such engines. It doesn't like turning at maximum revs, but it doesn't resist it, and the combination with a six-speed automatic transmission (with the driver's right hand and left foot not too lazy) ensures that progress can be quick.

Considering the Monde's weight (good 100 tons without "live content") and its performance, was the test consumption excessive? a good nine liters can be much less than eight liters per XNUMX kilometers, passing with an "economical" foot on the accelerator pedal.

Family vans are certainly not designed to take crazy turns, but it's nice to know that the Mondeo, even as a van, can do it if the driver demands it. The suspension (despite good damping) is stiff enough that the car doesn't wobble like a boat in a storm, handles safely (but not excessively) and can please with a precise steering wheel that provides (so far) enough feedback.

And if you add a good price to everything? Takle Titanium X will cost you about 30 thousand with all the standard equipment (Alcantara, dual-zone air conditioning, heated windshield, heated seats, active headlights, etc.). And that (also) puts it at the top of the class in terms of price points.

evaluation

  • If you need a lot of space, the choice in this class of cars is quite large. But if you want a lot of equipment at a good price, how much will the competition decrease? but Mondeo remains at the top.
