Ford may launch new hybrid Ranger in the US

Ford continues on the path of electrification and may now bring the new hybrid Ranger to the US market, although its launch will be the first in Europe.

As Chevrolet prepares its battery electric pickup, it's adding another hybrid pickup to its lineup. It is the hybrid Ford Ranger, the Ford pick-up that arrives in Europe as another alternative to a plug-in vehicle. However, speculation has also begun that the hybrid Ranger could come to the United States.

The next generation Ford Ranger will offer a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The news of a hybrid Ford Ranger comes after the automaker announced that its European arm will be fully electric by 2030. Additionally, Ford Europe wants all of its vehicles to offer some form of electrification by 2024. That means more plug-in hybrids, even in trucks.

Ford of Europe has confirmed that its electric hybrid plans include the Ranger, and some powertrain details have even been revealed. The leaked document claims that the next-generation pickup truck uses the current 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an electric motor. Combined, this should mean a total output of 362 hp. and 501 lb-ft.

For comparison, with EcoBoost alone, the US-market 2021 Ford Ranger has 270 hp and 310 lb-ft. And with the optional Ford Performance Level 2 package, it goes up to 315 hp and 370 lb-ft. But the next-generation Ford Raptor plug-in hybrid will likely still use the same 10-speed automatic transmission.

Can Ford offer the Ranger hybrid pickup in the US?

Outside the US, the Ford Ranger plug-in hybrid should arrive by model year 2023. But the future of the hybrid truck in the US and North America in general is a bit bleaker.

It's a fact that. However, while it will have a refreshed interior and updated exterior, there has been no news of a hybrid powertrain. However, we could get the next generation Ranger Raptor with the same 6-horsepower, turbocharged 2.7-liter V310 as the Bronco. In fact, a camouflaged Ranger Raptor was spotted testing a Bronco Warthog.

It's worth noting that Ford also wants more electrified vehicles in the US, which is why it has created all-electric vehicles on the horizon. So in that sense, the arrival of yet another midsize hybrid truck makes a lot of sense.

What we don't know yet and what else could change

Ford still hasn't confirmed whether the next-generation Ranger plug-in hybrid will be sold in the US. It has also not been confirmed if the next generation Ranger Raptor will be sold here.

However, it is possible that Ford North America will release another hybrid pickup. The next one is based on the same platform as the Bronco Sport and Escape. This means that you will probably also be using one of your powertrains. And while we don't know what powertrain it is, the Escape does have a plug-in hybrid version. So a hybrid Maverick is out of the question.
