Ford P1451 Troubleshooting OBD

Technical description

Malfunction in a chain of the solenoid valve of ventilation of the adsorber of the EVAP control system

What does this mean?

This particular DTC item refers to DTC P1451 on Ford vehicles. This does not apply to other brands of vehicles.

The EVAP system monitors the canister ventilation (CV) solenoid valve circuit. The test fails when the signal is outside the minimum or maximum calibrated parameters for the specified canister vent duty cycle as commanded by the PCM.

symptoms

You probably won't notice any handling issues.

reasons

The P1451 code may mean that one or more of the following events have occurred:

  • VPWR open circuit
  • The adsorber ventilation solenoid is damaged.
  • The adsorber ventilation solenoid circuit is open or shorted to ground, power, etc.
  • Damaged Powertrain Control Module (PCM)

Possible solutions

  • Check canister vent solenoid - Observe the EVAP canister vent solenoid PID EVAPCV signal and signal voltage (PCM control side) to verify proper operation. With the valve open, the EVAPCV shows 0% duty cycle and a voltage approximately equal to the battery voltage. When the valve is commanded to fully close, the EVAPCV shows 100% duty cycle and a minimum voltage drop of 4 volts is normal. The output test mode can be used to turn the output on/off to test its operation.
  • Replace the adsorber ventilation solenoid.
