Washer nozzles - Clean and replace

Washer nozzles - why are they needed?

The washer jets are part of the windshield washer system. Together with the wipers, they provide a transparent windshield so that the driver can always see what is on the road. Thanks to the nozzles, the washer fluid receives the right pressure and is directed at the right angle to the glass, due to which dirt is removed from the glass surface. In addition, they support the work of the wipers. Without the attachment, the wipers would run dry, which could damage the windshield. They can also be found on the rear trunk lid.

When to change washer nozzles?

Washer nozzles usually need to be replaced after winter, because then it is easier to clog or damage them.

Washing machine symptoms:

  • Dirty washer nozzle tips,
  • Loose nozzle closing tip,
  • One nozzle works better than the other
  • Washer fluid is sprayed unevenly / at the wrong angle,
  • No pressure in washer
  • Noticeable mechanical damage to the nozzle.

Since drivers rarely remember injectors, the most common cause of failure is heavy pollution. Clogged nozzles can be easily cleaned with household cleaners.

Part 1. Remove washer nozzles

The washer nozzles are located just below the top of the car's hood: where the washer jet hits the windshield.

Part 2. Step-by-step cleaning of nozzles

Gather the necessary tools: a stiff brush with fine bristles, scissors, toothpicks, WD-40 (or equivalent), compressed air (optional).

  1. Rinse the nozzles thoroughly under a faucet. Make sure that water does not get into the element to which the cable is connected to voltage.
  2. Spray the nozzles on the outside of the WD-40. Spray also on the hole where the fluid hose enters. Leave them on for a few minutes for the spray to take effect.
  3. Rinse the jets again with water and set them aside. Cut off as many brush fibers as there are washer nozzles. Take the filament and start cleaning the nozzles (1 filament per nozzle) by feeding it from the center of the nozzle. Be careful not to bend the fiber. Use a toothpick for the nozzle hole. Clean the entire tube gently in a circular motion.
  4. Rinse the nozzles again with water and make sure they are clean. Cover one end with your finger, then use compressed air or lung air to check if they are clean. If so, air will be felt from each end.
  5. Re-spray the nozzles with WD-40, but only on the outside. Be careful not to get too much splash inside - you can accidentally re-clog them. Leave a small film to protect the injectors from corrosion, rust and dirt.
  6. Adjust the washer nozzles if necessary. With the scissors deployed, carefully slide the nozzle in the desired direction, that is, the direction of action will correspond to the entire surface of the car window.
  7. Check the condition of the washer fluid supply hoses and all wires and channels.
  8. If everything works fine, you can reinstall the nozzles in their places.

Cleaning the rear window washer nozzle looks similar. Just find the tubes and nozzles and carefully connect them. The rest of the steps are the same as for the windshield injectors.

How to replace washer nozzles? Management

Replacing the nozzle is not difficult, basic tools are enough. The operation itself will take no more than half an hour.

  1. Tilt or completely remove the shroud and use a screwdriver to remove the hose from the nozzle tip. If the nozzles are not on the hood, but on the hood, you will need to remove the vibration damping mat - for this, use a clip remover.
  2. Pry the washer with a screwdriver or other flat tool - grasp it, disconnect and pull it out. Be careful with paint if your nozzle is built into the mask.
  3. Install a new nozzle - install it in place and press it into the clamps.
  4. Connect the rubber hose to the new part.
  5. Make sure everything works and the system is tight.

How long the washer nozzles last depends on the detergent used. It must be of high quality and meet all the manufacturer's recommendations - if you follow the recommendations, you will have to buy new sprinklers in 5-10 years. Remember not to replace the washing liquid with water, especially in summer and when this is not an emergency.
