Hacker: Tesla battery repair by replacing modules? It will last for several months, up to a year.

An interesting response to a 2013 Tesla Model S repair by Rich Rebuilds. Jason Hughes, hacker @wk057, says that replacing modules in the battery is just a temporary solution that will help for a few months, maybe a year. Later, everything will fall apart again.

Rich Rebuilds vs. wk057

The discussion is interesting because we are dealing with two practitioners, the absolute world leaders in the field of knowledge about Tesla propulsion systems. Hughes is an electronics expert, while Rich honed his skills through trial and error. We owe the first to the first measurements of the usable capacity of Tesla batteries, the latter, in turn, are fighting for access to parts and the right to repair.

Well according to wk057 Repairing a Tesla S battery by replacing modules will temporarily solve the problem for a few or several months.. After this time, the voltages will disappear again, because the modules were created on elements from different series, processed differently, withstood a different number of charge cycles, and so on. The hacker claims that he tested this solution several times and worked for about a year at best (source).

In his opinion it is no coincidence that Tesla does not offer such a repair, offers exchange only on the spot. The manufacturer should be aware that this will be ineffective, because the different voltages on the modules will sooner or later lead to a situation in which the Battery Management Mechanism (BMS) will again reduce its capacity. Which, as we can guess, will again limit the range of the car in order to protect the driver from the effects of recharging some cells.

On the other hand: you must remember that when Tesla decides to replace a battery, it uses recycled, disposed batteries. (with repair) - what is written directly on them.

There can be many types of failures, as well as ways to repair, but it's hard to believe that all such packages only had problems with wires, fuses, contacts, or were eliminated by cutting out problematic cells. It's even harder to believe that a manufacturer has a set of cells/modules that perfectly match each other in series and number of cycles under the same conditions - fulfilling the latter condition can be especially problematic.

Update 2021/09/16, hours. 13.13: Tesla fans decided that the information was completely false because the texture shown in the film was prepared in a graphics program (source). The filmmakers claim it's just a visual effect (because the battery hasn't actually been replaced), but the environment doesn't look convincing.

In our opinion, the reaction of Elon Musk's fans is overly emotional, the explanations sound plausible (since there is a movie, SOMETHING nice to show), and information about such battery replacements can be found on the Internet. The cost is blown up, but there are similar costs.
