Hyundai Kona Electric - impressions after the first drive

During Fleet Market 2018, we had the opportunity to drive a 64 kWh Hyundai Kona Electric. Here are a few impressions we gathered during this short contact with the car, plus one curiosity: the car should be officially available in Poland in January 2019.

The electric Hyundai, which we drove for about a dozen minutes, was exactly the same that Auto wiat editors tested. It doesn't surprise us the editor-in-chief of a magazine on the diesel automotive industry would like We would like too!

Here are our impressions:

  • INTERESTING FACT: the car's engine (drive) is slightly louder than that of the Leaf, i3 or Zoe, its other characteristics (structure?) Are audible especially at strong acceleration; of course, the cabin is as quiet as an electrician,
  • BIG PLUS: Maps showing the vehicle's mileage in electric mode should be featured in promotional material because it makes an impression when moving out of a competition.

Hyundai Kona Electric range with 73 percent battery

  • BIG PLUS: Acceleration similar to BMW i3 and better than Leaf or Zoe; Kona Electric handles dynamic driving without any problems,
  • LITTLE MINUS: the list of charging stations in car navigation leaves much to be desired, but at the rate at which changes are taking place today, it takes a year to have very outdated data.
  • BIG PLUS: the ability to adjust the regenerative braking force is the perfect solution, everyone should find a setting that suits their previous car. 3 arrows (the strongest regeneration) reminded me of a BMW i3 and it's a good memory,
  • LITTLE MINUS: A little worried about the absence of one driving pedal. The Leaf and i3 were extremely comfortable: you take your foot off the accelerator pedal and the car slows down and brakes to zero; The Kona Electric starts rolling from a certain point
  • ANI PLUS, ANI MINUS: the suspension and body seemed to me less rigid than in the BMW i3,

  • LITTLE MINUS: the central tunnel is a little in the way and seems a little unnecessary, without it there would be more space inside,
  • PLUS: We liked the standard ventilated seats with leather upholstery (statement from a company spokesperson),
  • SMALL MINUS: with a driver's height of 1,9 m, a child under 11-12 years old will be relatively comfortable to sit behind his back,
  • SMALL MINUS: pale turquoise - "Ceramic Blue" according to the manufacturer - the color somehow does not suit us,
  • A LITTLE MINUS: on the car, the “BlueDrive” badge, like on some kind of diesel.

We also learned that the car will "almost certainly" go on sale early next year. However, there was not even a rough price declaration - as if the representative of the company preferred not to scare us. According to our calculations, the price of the Kony Electric with the larger battery should start at just over PLN 180:

Hyundai Kona Electric - Editorial First Impressions (Summary)

Until recently, the Kia e-Niro was the ideal, most anticipated electric vehicle for the family. The Hyundai Kona Electric was enticing, but the small backseat space was intimidating. However, today our fears have been dispelled. If we had the choice of the e-Niro at the same price in six months or the Kona Electric today, or if the e-Niro 64 kWh turned out to be more expensive than the Kona Electric 64 kWh, we would choose an electric Hyundai.

Moreover, on a single charge, it should go a little further than the Kia Niro EV:
