What is an emissions inspection?

An emissions test is an annual assessment that ensures that your vehicle meets the North Carolina emission standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Do I need an NC emission test?

If you are registered in a county that requires an emission test, you may be required to pass this test when you update your tags each year. Currently, this inspection is required in 22 counties, which is almost a quarter of the counties in our state. These rules and requirements are subject to change. Annual emissions checks are currently required in the following counties: Alamance, Buncombe, Cabarrus, Cumberland, Davidson, Durham, Forsyth, Franklin, Gaston, Guildford, Iredell, Johnston, Lee, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, New Hanover, Onslow, Randolph, Rockingham , Rowan, Wake and Union.

However, not every driver in these counties is required to pass an annual inspection. There are several other parameters of this law that are not included in this check:

• Many vehicles qualify for an exemption if they are under 3 years old and have less than 70,000 miles on them. Consult it Frequently Asked Questions from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality to find out if your vehicle is eligible for this exception.
• You may also be exempt if your vehicle was manufactured before 1995.
• You are exempt from emissions testing if you have been approved for denial or release and paid all required fees.
