History of the JAC car brand
JAC is one of the five largest car manufacturers in China. The factories of the company have the ability to produce 500 thousand cars per year. In 2019, together with the Volkswagen concern, it is planned to start construction of a joint plant, on the conveyor of which electric vehicles will be assembled for the Chinese market.
In 2020, it was planned to build another plant in Russia. This factory will have to satisfy the needs for special equipment - light trucks and forklifts.
History of the JAC brand
In 1964, the Jianghuai automobile plant was established in the Chinese city of Hefei. This company specialized in the production of trucks with a small tonnage. To expand its product line, a separate division was created to deal with the manufacture of another category of vehicles.
The new brand appeared in 1999, but it began to manufacture cars only 3 years later. The reason was the lengthy preparation of the conveyor: it was necessary to purchase a lot of new equipment, because the main capacities were already outdated.
In the first year of production, more than 120 thousand copies of all kinds of equipment came off the assembly line of the brand. Initially, the main profile of the company was commercial transport: trucks, buses, and special equipment.
Here are the main brand development milestones:
- 2003 - the company buys from Isuzu Motors the right to produce freight vehicles, as well as diesel engines based on their technology. The first minibuses of the brand - model N.
- 2004 - the company enters into an agreement with Hyundai, which becomes a technological partner. The first joint model is ss. This minibus was built on the basis of drawings of a similar bus from Hyundai - Starex. In addition to cooperation with the South Korean company JAC produces trucks. The most common is the HFC model. In this category there are four-wheel drive vehicles as well as 6-wheel drive vehicles with 4 drive wheels. The carrying capacity of the special equipment is 2,5-25 tons. At the same time, the brand creates a wide variety of buses, ranging from small city models to large, comfortable options for tourism.
- 2008 - 30 percent of commercial vehicles sold in the Chinese market are JAC products. Starting this year, the company decides to expand its model range by starting to produce light vehicles. To create a decent car, the automaker is once again partnering with a South Korean companion. The first co-production vehicle was the Rein, which was based on the South Korean counterpart SantaFe. The difference between these SUVs was in the "stuffing" of the novelty, for example, in a different suspension. The four-wheel drive variants were fitted with a stiffer modification to improve stability on Chinese roads.
- 2009 - Italian design studio Pininfarina creates the bodywork for the Tojoy urban car, which will be rolled out next year. The engine that comes with the car has a volume of 1,3 liters. This is either a standard Chinese-made 99 horsepower motor, or an analogue of 93 horsepower. from Mitsubishi. The license for this model was acquired by a Russian auto company in Taganrog, and is selling it as Tagaz C10.
- 2010 - the beginning of the development of its own electric car J3 EV. In a fairly short period of time, engineers were able to present a working version, which was shown at an automobile exhibition in Beijing. By the way, the development of the hybrid crossover Rav4 was not done without the participation of specialists from JAC.
- 2012 - An agreement is signed with another automaker (Toyota), which improves the efficiency of SUVs and creates new generations of buses.
Today, JAC factories produce transmissions, bus chassis and truck frames. Together with other auto companies, the production of passenger and off-road versions of cars continues.
Owners and management
Although the firm was formed from the Hefei Jianghuai Automobile Factory, it is a state-owned company. Unlike brands such as Ford or Toyota, this company is controlled by the Chinese government, so government orders are primarily carried out at its factories.
Since any government is interested in creating high quality national cars, the management closely monitors compliance with norms and standards not only regarding technical issues, but also safety with comfort for passengers. The company's shares are controlled by the Shanghai Stock Exchange.
