What are the parts of a cable winch?

Rope winch load hook

The load hook is connected to a cable that will be attached to an object that will be moved or pulled.

Ratchet switch pawl on cable winch

The pawl of the ratchet switch can be set up or down to engage with the pinion located on the drive axle. Placing the pawl in the up position will allow the winch to wind or pull/move an object. The lower position allows you to unwind the cable.

Cable, drum and gears on a cable winch

The main ratchet crank locking mechanism consists of a wire rope slipped onto a drum with a gear on one side.

Crank handle on cable winch

The crank handle is connected to the drive shaft, which can be rotated clockwise or counterclockwise. It has a long handle for ease of use.

Rope winch mount

It is a heavy plate chassis supporting a ratchet crank locking mechanism. It contains mounting holes on the base plate that can be used to mount hard flat surfaces on the vehicle.

Submersible axle of cable winch

The drive axle passes through the center of the winch and drives a ratchet crank locking mechanism connected to the handle.

Each time the handle is turned clockwise or counterclockwise, the gears mesh with each other and turn the drum, allowing the cable to wind up or unwind.

Rope winch drum axle

The drum axle holds the drum in place. Turning the handle rotates both the drive axle and the drum axle, causing the drum to rotate.
