Test drives of electric vehicles

Jaguar I-Pace and our reader. This is what the problem might be a poorly chosen electrician [letter to the editor]

Mr. Artur, our Reader and regular Elektrowóz commentator, uses a Jaguar I-Pace. Out of enthusiasm — bought this car! – turned into disappointment and humility. The electric car does not help him achieve his goals, on the contrary: he begins to bother him. Here is the story he shared with us. Our comment is at the end of the text.

The text has been slightly edited. Subtitles from the editorial board.

Jaguar I-Pace. From admiration to disappointment

I am almost two years old with Electric Jaguar. I drove about 32 thousand kilometers while in Poland. I have been associated with the Jaguar brand since 2010 when I bought my first Jaguar Land Rover vehicle. I met I-Pace at the pre-premiere show, I had the opportunity to drive it around Warsaw, then at the presentation of the track, and finally I got a car for a week. When I sold my Jaguar XKR, I said, "Maybe it's time for the I-Pace."

I love this car. I love the way it drives. I like its acceleration, finish. I love driving on the bus lanes and free parking in Warsaw. And most of all I like the silence in the cabin. Walk through this shiny carbut probably only to the city. When buying, I considered the electric Jaguar as a second car that could become my main car in the future. Now I have to admit that this will not happen in the foreseeable future.

I go many longer routes that do not tire me; I need enough rest to act on the spot. In addition, I communicate on the way, resolve issues by phone and, by the way, I want to arrive on time and return within a reasonable time frame.

Frustration

Jaguar I-Pace surprised me with its high power consumption.... The flow rate can increase with a sharp drop in temperature. This is unexpected and can be very frustrating. We came home several times with 0% battery [which was inconvenient]:

Recently he was supposed to go with me to Poznan [from Warsaw, about 310 km]. But he didn't get a chance, as it turned out that I would have to stop to recharge on the way. There was a risk that I would not succeed. Later, during a trip to Miedzyzdroje [646 km], it turned out that my fears were justified. When the temperature drops below 0 degrees Celsius, the range can drop to 200 kilometers..

I have two routes that I travel regularly. One is located 300 kilometers (plus a return) from Augustow, the other is 646 kilometers from Miedzyzdroje. We are traveling as a family: two adults, two children, two dogs of 30 kg each and luggage. In order for the I-Pace to have a reasonable power consumption, each of these routes must be driven below the established limits.... In addition, reaching out to the charger, you can always find that it is damaged or busy (which is what happened).

And now attention: the trip to Miedzyzdroje with very negative temperatures took about 11 hours one way.... An internal combustion vehicle overcomes it in 6-6,5 hours. Departure from Augustow at an air temperature of 4-8 degrees 5 hours.... We load there, on the way, on the way back and, of course, on the spot. An internal combustion vehicle covers this route in 3–3,5 hours for one refueling. We will get there, we will return, and we will have enough fuel to wander around after we return.

Currently I drive a Land Rover Discovery 5 with a 3.0 D engine. I am driving the same route in Audi Q5, BMW 5 and X5, Jaguars XE, XF, F-Type, XKR, E-Pace and F-Pace, Land Rovers ... : Freelander, Discovery Sport, Range Rover Sport 3.0 D, SVR and 4.4 D, and even the Volvo XC60 T6.

Small trunk, slow loading

Energy consumption is one minus. Second insufficient luggage space. I-Pace is the first car in a long time that I had to give up something. We didn't have enough space. [The electric Jaguar has a volume of 557 liters], but the rear window limits the car's capacity somewhat.

Charging your car at home during your day-to-day city driving is not cumbersome.... But it’s not like that on the road. The chargers are slow and there are surprises. In my opinion, there is no infrastructure in Poland that would allow using such a car for free. 40-50 kW on the road - a gloomy jokeIn addition, charging stations are in random locations and are often used to promote something.

In my opinion, in order to be free to use an electrician, you should spend a maximum of 15 minutes with the charger. Unfortunately, what's worse, the last software update in my car brought ....

Of course: it is possible that I chose the wrong car, that other electric cars are less burdensome on the road. Perhaps Tesla uses less energy. Although from meetings with Tesla owners at charging stations it did not become clear that I was so wrong ...

Audi recently offered me the e-tron test. Let's see if we manage to implement it.

Note from the editors of www.elektrowoz.pl: We are publishing this material to let readers know that a poorly chosen electrician can dissuade them from using another electrician. We have another Reader who also chose the Jaguar I-Pace, and recently we accidentally found out that he ordered a Tesla (from which he defended himself for a long time). According to his comments, he had problems similar to those described, preferring to go on long trips in an internal combustion car, rather than in a comfortable and futuristic electric crossover.

As long as the car has a reasonable energy consumption (for example, an average of 20 kWh / 100 km), then refueling energy on a 40-50 kW charger will not hurt so much, because we get + 200-230 km / h (+100 km in 30 minutes)). However, when the consumption is higher, we like to drive a little harder and the temperature drops and the calculations begin. It's not a good idea to stand on the charger and wait for the energy to drop into the battery while driving at 140 km / h a moment earlier in silence and comfort.
