Jaguar XF 2.0 D (132 kW) Prestige

Jaguars are no longer cars, you might think that dealers are offering an extra discount on them if you have gray hair on your head. This transformation somehow began during the transition period under the auspices of Ford. While we liked to tarnish some Ford models at the time with the slightly curved sheet metal bearing the Jaguar badge, this transformation was still necessary for Jaguar to be able to follow its premium German competitors. But the pace was too fast and Ford decided to sell. Now that Jaguar is under the umbrella of the Tate Indian Gallery, it shows them much better. How the hell can you make a better car out of Lego bricks than Dad's? Clearly, Tata did not get involved in the Jaguar brand with its ideology, technology and manufacturing processes, but only added a hefty heap of money in an attempt to restore its former reputation (and, of course, sales results).

Let's go to the newcomer in the ranks of Jaguar. At first glance, the second-generation XF looks little different from its predecessor. None of the lesser XE. In fact, they share a common platform, chassis design, and most of the engines. The new XF is seven millimeters shorter and three millimeters shorter than the old one, but the wheelbase is 51 centimeters longer. Due to this, we got a little space inside (especially for the back bench) and took care of the best driving performance.

Although the appearance resembles the previous version, the shape has been updated so that aggressive movements match the name of the predatory cat. In our measurements, we had quite a few problems finding a piece of regular sheet metal to which we would attach our meter's magnetic antenna, since the new XF's body is almost entirely made of aluminum. This, of course, can be seen from the weight of the car, because the new product is as much as 190 kilograms lighter. They also keep up with the times in terms of brightness as the new XF is now available with full LED headlights. They shine perfectly, but, unfortunately, they are not obscured by the system of partial switching off of individual diodes, but only by the classic switching between long and short lights, which sometimes can work strangely and often blinds oncoming (especially on the track). As for the interior, you can write that it looks much less aggressive than the exterior suggests.

In fact, it's pretty fruitless, and only a trained eye can separate the driver's workspace in the XF from the workspace in the XE. Although the new XF now offers sensors with all-digital technology, the cramped car displayed speed and RPM in a classic manner, with a smaller multi-function display in the center. Apparently, positive customer feedback on Jaguar's automatic transmission with a rotary knob also convinced executives to keep that decision. The new cat also made headway in the infotainment area with Bosch's new InControl multitasking system with a 10,2-inch touchscreen mounted on the center console.

The individual tabs are beautifully animated, the controls are simple, we just stink a bit from the fact that activating the seat heating takes deep into the menu rather than giving it a simple button. Therefore, just below we find a button that changes the character of the car. The damping-adjustable chassis, combined with Jaguar's drive control system, ensures that the vehicle adapts to the driving style. With four selected programs (Eco, Normal, Winter and Dynamic), vehicle parameters (steering wheel, gearbox and accelerator response, engine performance) are combined into a symphony that best suits the desired driving style. The test XF was powered by a 180-horsepower turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine. We are not accustomed to four-cylinder engines in this type of sedans, but they are a necessary evil for Jaguar to achieve the desired sales results, since the European market allows little or no compromise with its norms.

And how does it work? 180 "horses" is a number that provides decent movement in such a car. It is clear that you should not count on the fact that you will become a master in the fast lane, but you can easily catch up with the flow of cars. It is better to rely on the 430 Nm of torque, which kicks in already at 1.750 engine rpm and works great with the eight-speed automatic transmission. It works smoothly, without any hesitation when choosing a gear, no matter what you do with the accelerator pedal. Of course, the quietest operation is not to be expected from a four-cylinder engine. Especially when the engine revs are close to the red numbers, but still the XF is better soundproofed than the XE, so the noise is not as annoying as the younger brother. However, if you're used to the loud 2,2-liter four-cylinder from its predecessor, the new XNUMX-liter will sound like spa music to your ears.

Twenty years ago, it was hard to imagine how to praise diesel fuel consumption in Jaguar tests, but in simple terms, we would say: "This is how we have it." Yes, the new XF can be a very economical car. An efficient engine, lightweight body and aerodynamic design ensure that such a powerful Jaguar will consume only 6 to 7 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. The new XF is more than a worthy competitor to German sedans, especially in terms of driving performance, roominess and economy. It will leave you a little cold inside, especially if you remember the times we sighed at the sight of materials in old Jaguars. The good news is that Indian owners are willing to take on the challenge, and the new XF could discreetly warn the Germans not to peek over the nearby fence.

Overall rating (346/420)

  • Jaguar's Indian financial injection is showing itself very positively. The XF is on its way to a bit of a commotion between its German rivals.

  • Exterior (15/15)

The main trump card that gives him the greatest advantage over German competitors.

  • Interior (103/140)

The interior is discreet but elegant. Materials and workmanship are at a fairly high level.

  • Engine, transmission (48

    / 40)

The engine is a little loud, but it has a lot of torque. The gearbox works fine.

  • Driving performance (61

    / 95)

The driving characteristics are more colorful on the skin of calm English gentlemen than on what looks suggest.

  • Performance (26/35)

Above average savings significantly improve results over average performance.

  • Security (39/45)

The premium position just doesn't let Jaguar fall behind.

    segment.

  • Economy (54/50)

Unfortunately, the loss in value significantly distorts the otherwise good cost savings.
