How to quickly and accurately find the source of an oil leak

When it comes to automotive fluid leaks, oil leaks are among the most common. Degreaser and UV leak detector kits will help you find the source.

Engine oil leaks are the most common of all automotive fluid leaks. Due to the large number of seals and gaskets located around the engine compartment, oil can leak from almost anywhere.

If the leak happened some time before you noticed it, the oil may have spread far from the real source. Air drawn through the engine while driving or pushed by a cooling fan can cause escaping oil to cover large areas. Also, unless it is a large and/or obvious leak, some investigation will be required to locate the source, as it may also be covered in dirt and debris.

Part 1 of 2: Use a degreaser

It is best not to start replacing seals, gaskets, or other components until you have located the exact source of the leak. If the leak is not obvious, it is easiest to start looking for the source with a cold engine.

Necessary materials

  • Universal degreaser

Step 1: Use a degreaser. Spray some general purpose degreaser on the area where you see the oil. Let it penetrate for a few minutes and then wipe it off.

Step 2: Check for a leak. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. See if you can find a leak under the car.

If there is no obvious leak, then it may be so small that it may take days of driving to find it.

Part 2 of 2: Use the U/V Leak Detection Kit

The fastest way to find a leak is to use a leak detection kit. These kits come with fluorescent dyes designed for specific motor fluids and UV light. As the oil begins to come out of the source of the leak, the fluorescent dye will flow out with it. Illuminating the engine compartment with UV light will cause the paint to glow, usually a fluorescent green that is easy to spot.

Necessary materials

  • U/V leak detector kit

Step 1: Put the paint on the engine. Pour the leak detector paint into the engine.

  • Functions: If your engine is low on oil, add a bottle of suitable engine leak dye to the oil you add to the engine, then pour the oil and leak detector mixture into the engine. If the engine oil level is OK, just fill the engine with paint.

Step 2: Turn on the engine. Run the engine for 5-10 minutes or even take a short trip.

Step 3: Check for oil leaks. Allow the engine to cool before directing UV light into hard to reach areas. If you have yellow glasses in your kit, put them on and start inspecting the engine compartment with an ultraviolet lamp. Once you spot the glowing green paint, you've found the source of the leak.

Once you have identified the source of your vehicle's oil leak, contact a certified service technician such as AvtoTachki.
