How long does the anti-lock braking system relay last?

The ABS relay in your vehicle controls a pump that pumps brake fluid into the ABS system. It includes a pump that provides fluid pressure increase in the ABS system. If it fails, the pump will stop working, there will be no fluid pressure and, ultimately, the ABS system will stop working. You will still have manual braking, but it may take you longer to stop, and there is also the risk of slipping if you need to brake hard. The operation of your anti-lock braking system depends on many components, and if one of them fails, the entire system fails. This is why the ABS control relay is so important.

Every time the ABS is used, the anti-lock braking system relay works. As with all electrical components in your vehicle, the ABS relay control is susceptible to damage from corrosion and normal wear and tear. There are signs that could indicate that your ABS relay has failed, but be aware that they can also indicate other problems such as a pump failure or a blown fuse. They are:

  • hard braking
  • No brake pedal pulsation during hard stops
  • ABS light comes on and stays on

For your safety, a qualified mechanic should check for any ABS problems. If necessary, the mechanic can replace the anti-lock braking system relay.
