How long does an air pump filter last?

In any vehicle that has an emissions system, also known as a smog control system, it is very important that the air entering the system is free of pollutants and debris. This is because the air is recirculated along with the exhaust gases and any contaminants enter the combustion chamber. The air pump filter prevents this and works in much the same way as a normal air filter. The air pump filter is made of cardboard or mesh fibers which are designed to trap debris and of course it will become clogged at some point and will need to be replaced.

When you drive, your air pump's filter is working. There are so many variables involved here that it's impossible to say with certainty how long the filter will last, but it's probably safe to assume that at some point you'll need to replace it. How often you ride will make a difference, as will the conditions in which you ride. Basically, the more contaminants sucked into the air pump, the more often the filter needs to be changed.

Signs that your air pump filter may need replacing include:

  • Poor fuel economy
  • Rough idle
  • Vehicle fails emissions test

It is possible to continue driving with a dirty air pump filter, but this is not advisable. If you do, you risk engine damage and possibly costly repairs. If you think the air pump filter needs to be replaced, have it checked by a qualified mechanic.
