Despite their popularity in the 1950s, stucco ceilings, sometimes referred to as "popcorn" or "acoustic ceilings", are now less common in homes. Artex, unlike Stucco, is also a popular textured ceiling covering found in homes. | ||||
To remove a textured ceiling, you will need:

Removing a textured ceiling is not particularly difficult, but can be unpleasant. Make sure you wear protective clothing as paint from the ceiling will fall on you as you scratch. | ||||
Step 1 - Prepare the roomClear the room of all contents, including any hanging electrical appliances. Turn off the power supply in the room at the fuse box. | ||||
Step 2 - Protect the walls and floorCover the floor with plastic rags. Also protect the wall by hanging rags with masking tape about 5mm below the ceiling. | ||||
Step 3 - Soaking the CeilingSoften the texture with a light mist of water. Then wait a couple of minutes for the water to soak into the ceiling. | ||||
Step 4 - Use a scraperScrape the texture away from you to remove it from the ceiling with the scraper. | ||||
Step 5 - SandUse a sanding wheel with 100 grit sandpaper to remove excess dust and smooth the surface of the ceiling. | ||||
Step 6 - Clean up the clutterFold up the plastic wrap, picking up the rest of the textured ceiling, and then throw it all away. |
