How to sharpen a scraper blade?

If your scraper does not have replacement blades, you will need to sharpen the blade by hand. This can be done with a stone, cutter or flat file, a rag and a drop of machine oil. | |
Step 1 - Remove the BladeRemove the blade from the scraper. | |
Step 2 - Secure in a viseThe safest way to sharpen a scraper blade is to secure it in a vise so you don't have to hold the blade in your hand. | |
Step 3 - Remove BurrRemove any burrs that may be present with a file or stone. | |
Step 4 - SharpenRun the file or stone along the length and at the same angle as the blade, removing any dents or damage. Do this for both sides of the blade. Repeat this several times until you get a clean and sharp edge. | |
Step 5 - Remove the New BurrSharpening the tool will create a new burr. This should be easily removed with very light strokes of a file or stone. Be careful not to damage the sharp edge. If necessary, repeat the sharpening procedure using a finer file or stone. The edge will become progressively sharper, each time creating smaller and smaller burrs. | |
Step 6 - Lubricate the BladeAfter sharpening, use an old rag or rag to wipe the blade with machine oil. | |
Step 7 - Replace BladeInsert the blade into the scraper. |
