The alternator is one of those parts whose failure can leave you dry and dry on the side of the road. This important component of your vehicle's systems converts mechanical energy into electrical energy, which in turn powers the vehicle's electrical systems. Most importantly, the alternator charges the battery, so when this part fails, you won't be able to start your car.

Most generators simply wear out over time. Signs that your alternator needs to be replaced include:

  • Illuminated "ALT" light on the dashboard
  • Screeching, screeching or growling due to a faulty belt or bearings in the connection between the alternator and the crankshaft
  • Rough idle or other abnormal engine behavior
  • Light dims or flickers due to power outages

How to make sure you are buying a quality alternator:

  • Check part numberA: The necessary information to obtain the correct part is usually found on the alternator itself. If not, call the dealership with your VIN and they will tell you which one you need.

  • Buying from a trusted dealerA: This is the part you don't need to replace often, so whether you're buying online or in a physical store, make sure you're buying from a reputable source.

  • Get the best possible guarantee: Failed alternators are not uncommon, and repairs are quite time consuming and expensive, so you will need the best guarantee that your part is of high quality and will be replaced in the event of a malfunction.

  • shake the generator: Sounds weird, but if something rattles or clicks, ask for another one.

New alternators can cost anywhere from $100 to several hundred dollars, so this is one of the parts you might consider purchasing as a refurbished one. If you go down this path, take the following precautions into account:

  • Use a voltmeter to check power to the remanufactured part. If you are buying from a store, ask them to test it for you.

  • Get a guarantee. Even remanufactured parts may come with a warranty, and especially in the case of refurbished parts, you need an additional warranty.

  • Know the source. Find out where the generator came from, if at all possible. Even a remanufactured part only has a limited number of miles it will last, so if it's pretty close to the end of its life, you're better off investing in a new one.
