Spark plug wires connect the spark plug to whatever they spark. Whenever you change your spark plugs, it's a good idea to check those spark plug wires to make sure they're up to date. Spark plug wires are relatively inexpensive and having a new kit just keeps everything in top working shape.

If the wire insulators of the spark plug wires are worn out, then the electricity passing through them can get into other pieces of metal, resulting in a weak spark or no spark at all.

What to look for when buying an ignition cable:

  • OEM is not always the best optionA: Aftermarket spark plug wires are just as successful as the original ones.

  • Insulation: Look for strong insulation for the ignition cable. You check the wire from the outside to make sure the rubber is in good condition and fully able to insulate the inner wire. Double insulation is best; An ignition cable with a high-strength silicone insulator is a great option as it can withstand the wear and tear that can cause constant heat from the engine and moisture intrusion.

  • Engine detailA: You must get an ignition cable that is designed for your engine. Be careful, if you have replaced the engine in your vehicle with something different from the original, you will not be able to trust your vehicle's parts manual to get the correct information. Don't waste your time and money on one that doesn't fit your car.

  • Warranty: Check the warranty - most of them have a 5-year or 50,000-mile warranty or a 1-year unlimited mileage warranty, depending on which auto parts supplier you work with. If you find that you need to buy one wire, make sure the other wires don't look frayed. If necessary, you can replace the bundle.
