How to Buy a Personalized License Plate in Oregon

A personalized license plate is a great way to add a bit of personality to the front and back of your car. A custom plate gives you the opportunity to use your vehicle to convey the mood. You can advertise your business, initial your child or spouse, support your favorite professional or varsity sports team, or just say something funny.

In Oregon, you can choose from a custom license plate design as well as a customized license plate message. With these two elements, you can create a truly unique license plate that will help give your car a fun personality.

Part 1 of 3. Choose a custom license plate design

Step 1. Go to the Oregon license plate page.. Visit the Oregon Department of Transportation license plate website.

Step 2. Go to the personalized numbers page.. Visit the personalized Oregon license plate page.

Click on the link "Individual (personalized) plates".

  • FunctionsA: Most special license plate designs cannot be modified. Click on any of the available special plate links on the page if you would like to order a special plate without customization.

Part 2 of 3. Order your personal license plates

Step 1: Download the personalized nameplate form. Download and print the application form for the production of an individual plate.

Click on the link that says "Application for a custom plate" to download the form and then print it out.

  • FunctionsA: If you prefer, you can fill out the form on your computer before printing it out.

Step 2: Fill in the information. Fill in your details in the application.

At the top of the form, enter your name and phone number, as well as your vehicle's year, make, current license plate, and vehicle identification number.

  • Functions: If you don't have the vehicle identification number handy, you can find it on the driver's side of the dashboard where the dashboard connects to the windshield. The number is best seen from the outside of the car, through the windshield.

  • A warningA: Your vehicle must be registered in Oregon in your name in order to apply for an individual license plate.

Step 3. Select the message on the license plate.. Select a license plate message.

In the License Plate Type area, select the license plate design you selected earlier.

Complete the three areas for license plate messages. Follow the instructions at the top of the page to determine which characters and order of characters are allowed. Please follow these instructions carefully or your message will not be accepted.

  • Functions: Be sure to complete all three messages. If your first option is not available, your second option will be used, and so on. If you have three options, you greatly increase your chances of getting a personalized license plate.

  • A warning: Rude, inappropriate or offensive license plate messages will not be accepted. You also cannot have a license plate message that promotes alcohol or drugs in any way.

Step 4: Download the second form. Download and print the following form.

Return to the personal license plate page and click on the link “Application for registration, renewal, replacement or transfer of license plates and / or stickers”.

Print the form.

Step 5: Fill in your vehicle information. Fill in the vehicle information in the form.

Complete all vehicle information as accurately as possible.

  • Functions: Be sure to avoid the section that says "DMV only".

Step 6: Fill in the owner information. Complete the owner or tenant information section of the app.

Fill in your personal information, including your name, address and form of identification. This information should be for the owner or lessee of the vehicle.

  • Functions: Be sure to indicate the co-owner or co-tenant, if any.

  • A warning: If you are renting a car, make sure your rental agreement allows you to use personalized license plates.

Step 7: Fill in your insurance information. Enter your auto insurance information.

Step 8: Sign the form and date. Sign and date the form for both the owner or tenant and the co-owner or co-tenant. Add your phone number where prompted.

Step 9: Fill in the plate information. Fill in your license plate information.

Check the "Replace plates" checkbox, then select the type of plate and select "Returned".

Step 10: Fill out your information on the second page. Fill in your personal details on the second page.

Step 11: Pay for licenses. Pay for personal license plates.

Write a check or receive a money order for the cost of the license plate design (which can be viewed on the personalized license plates page) plus a $50 personalization fee.

Send a check or money order to the Oregon DMV.

Step 12: Submit Applications by Mail. Submit applications and payment to DMV.

Seal both applications and payment in an envelope and mail to:

Part 3 of 3. Set up your personal license plates

Step 1. Check if your plate is available.. Find out if your personal license plates are available.

Once your license plate application has been received and reviewed, you will receive a notification in the mail stating if license plates are available.

If license plates were not available, complete another application with three new custom license plate messages.

  • FunctionsA: Your payment will not be processed if your plates are not available.

Step 2: Get Your Plates. Receive your personal license plates by mail.

If your application is accepted, your plates will be manufactured and shipped to the address you provided in your application.

  • FunctionsA: Your plates usually take eight to ten weeks to arrive.

Step 3: Install the plates. Set your personal license plates.

Once you get the new plates, install them on both the front and rear of the vehicle.

  • Functions: If you are not comfortable removing old license plates or installing new ones, call a mechanic to help you with the job.

Be sure to stick your current registration stickers on your license plates before driving.

Step 4: Turn in your old plates. Turn in your old license plates.

Once you have installed your personal license plates, you need to turn in your old ones in one of two ways.

You can remove or destroy registration tags and then recycle your old license plates. Or you can send plates to:
