Symptoms of a bad or faulty track

Common symptoms include steering wheel vibration, careless driving, front end noise, and wobble at high speeds.

Suspension alignment is vital to the smooth and safe operation of any vehicle. One of the components designed to keep your wheels and tires in the correct longitudinal and lateral position is the track. The track is used on vehicles with a coil spring suspension system and is designed to assist other suspension parts and components in making the steering system work reliably. Theoretically, the trackbar is one of those parts that should last quite a while; however, like any other mechanical part, it is subject to wear and tear and may even fail completely.

When a track begins to wear out, it has a major impact on your vehicle's handling and handling, and in some cases, acceleration and braking. One end of the track is attached to the axle assembly and the other end is attached to the frame or chassis. Most mechanics check the tie rod during a normal front suspension adjustment, as its adjustment is critical to perfect front wheel alignment.

If a track begins to wear, is damaged, or has completely failed, it will display several warning signs or symptoms. If not repaired promptly, it can cause excessive tire wear, poor handling, and sometimes create safety situations. Listed below are some of the symptoms you should be aware of that indicate a problem with your track bar.

1. Vibration on the steering wheel

The track bar is a one piece piece and usually has no issues with the bar itself. The problem lies in the mounting connections, bushings and support elements. When the attachment is loose, it can cause the suspension parts to move and in some cases, the steering support brackets to shake. This is indicated by the vibration of the steering wheel. Unlike wheel balance, which usually starts shaking at speeds above 45 mph, this vibration will be felt instantly when the track is loosened. If you feel a vibration when starting off and the vibration gets worse as the vehicle accelerates, contact your mechanic as soon as possible.

Some of the common problems with this symptom include CV joints, anti-roll bar bearings, or steering rack problems. Because of the many trouble spots, it's important that you professionally diagnose the problem before attempting a repair.

2. The car drives freely

Since the steering rack is designed to support the steering system, it makes sense that a loose condition while driving could also be a warning sign. This usually occurs when the crossbeam's internal fastening to the chassis or frame is loose. In this case, the steering wheel will float in your hand and steering effort will be greatly reduced. If you fix this problem quickly, it's very likely that a certified mechanic will be able to fix the truck.

3. Noises from under the front end

When the track is loosened, it causes vibration as well as a noticeable sound. This is because the support brackets and bushings move when the handlebar is turned or moving forward. The noise under the car will get louder when you drive slowly or go over speed bumps, roadways, or other bumps in the road. As with any of these symptoms, a phone call to an ASE certified mechanic should be the first thing you do if you notice them.

4. Wobble at high speeds

Because the cross member is supposed to be the vehicle's suspension stabilizer, when it weakens or breaks, the front end will float and create a "rocking" feeling. This is a major safety issue as it can cause the vehicle to spin out of control if it becomes unmanageable. If you see this warning sign, you should stop your vehicle in a safe place and have it towed home. When you get home, contact your local ASE certified mechanic to have the problem checked. Chances are the mechanic will have to replace the tie rod and then adjust the car's alignment so your tires don't wear prematurely.

Anytime you encounter any of the above warning signs, getting in touch with a professional mechanic in a timely manner can save you thousands of dollars in unnecessary repairs. Local ASE certified AvtoTachki mechanics are experienced in properly diagnosing and replacing worn or broken tie rods.
