How to Buy a Personalized Wisconsin License Plate

Personalized license plates are one of the best ways to add flair to your vehicle. With a personalized license plate, you can use the front and back of your car to express your feelings to the world. It can be a word or a phrase, a company or business, a sports team or an alma mater, or just a loved one.

In Wisconsin, you can choose a custom plaque design to complement your personalized message. By using both the design and the message, you are sure to be able to create a license plate that is perfect for you and absolutely one of a kind.

Part 1 of 3. Choose your custom license plate

Step 1. Go to the Wisconsin Personalized License Plate Search page.. Visit the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Personalized License Plate Search website.

Step 2: Choose a license plate design. Choose a license plate design.

Click on the sidebar link titled "Special Numbers" to see a sample of all license plate designs available.

Scroll through the options to decide which one you need.

Step 3: Select a license plate message. Choose a personalized license plate message.

Return to the personalized numbers search page and click the "Check for personalized numbers now" button.

Select your vehicle type from the dropdown menu, then click Next.

Select the license plate design you have chosen from the dropdown menu, then click next.

Enter a message in the field. At the top of the page, you will see how many characters you can use.

You can save time by entering the second or third option.

  • Functions: You can use all numbers, letters, and spaces, but not special characters. The letter "O" can be replaced with the number "0".

  • A warning: License plate message must not be rude, offensive or inappropriate. If your submission relates to one of these items, it may appear as available on the website, but your application will be rejected.

Step 4: Check if the message is available. Check if your license plate message is available. Click the box that says "I'm not a robot," then click the "Next" button.

If your plate or plate options are not available, keep trying until you find the right plate message.

Part 2 of 3. Order your personal license plates

Step 1: download the app. Download and print the application form.

When you find a message about an available license plate, click on the image of a special license plate to go to the page for that license plate.

Click on the form link on the page to download the application.

Print out the application. If you wish, you can fill out the form on your computer and then print it out.

  • Functions: You can read the form download link page for answers to any questions you may have.

Step 2: Fill in the plate information. Fill in the information about your personal nameplate. Check the box next to "I want personalized plates."

Choose whether you would like to be contacted if your license plate is not available, or if you would like a randomly assigned license plate on a license plate design of your choice.

Record the license plate message you chose earlier in the First Choice field. Write additional options if you choose.

Give a brief but detailed description of the meaning of your license plate.

  • Functions: use a slash to indicate a space.

Step 3: Fill in your vehicle information. Fill in your vehicle information in the app.

Enter the year, make, body type, current license plate and identification number of your vehicle.

  • FunctionsA: If you don't know your vehicle identification number, you can find it on the dashboard on the driver's side where the dashboard connects to the windshield. The number is easily visible from the outside of the car, through the windshield.

  • A warningA: Your vehicle must be registered in the state of Wisconsin.

Step 4: Fill in your personal information. Fill in your personal information.

Enter your name, address, email address, phone number, and driver's license number.

  • FunctionsA: You must be the registered owner or lessee of your vehicle. If your car is on lease, make sure personal license plates are allowed under the rental agreement.

  • A warningA: Your driver's license must be issued by the State of Wisconsin.

Step 5: Sign and Date. Sign and date the application.

Sign and date the application, then check the "Have license plates in good condition in my possession" box.

  • Functions: Check the box in the sidebar called "Opt Out" if you do not want your information to be available to the Department of Transportation.

Step 6: Make a payment. Pay the fees for your individual license plate.

Write a check or receive a money order drawn to the Registration Fees Fund for the amount shown on the first page of the application in the Fees Required section.

Step 7: Submit the form by mail. Submit your application to the Department of Transportation.

Part 3 of 3. Set up your personal license plates.

Step 1: Get Your Plates. Get new plates in the mail.

Once your application has been received, reviewed and accepted, your plates will be manufactured and shipped directly to you.

  • FunctionsA: Approximately one month before the arrival of your tablets, you will receive a Certificate of Registration for new tablets.

Step 2: Install the plates. Install new license plates.

When you receive your personalized number plates, install them on both the front and rear of your vehicle.

Don't forget to attach your current registration stickers to your new license plates.

  • Functions: If you are not comfortable removing old plates or installing new ones, call a mechanic to help you.

  • A warningA: Your new plates must be installed within two days of their arrival.
