How to Buy a Personalized License Plate in South Carolina

Personalized license plates are a great way to add flair and uniqueness to your vehicle. A personalized license plate allows you to select the numbers and numbers on your license plate so that it can tell you something meaningful. You can try spelling a word or phrase, or just write something meaningful to you, like your significant other's initials or your pet dog's name.

In South Carolina, a personalized license plate is called a tag and is very easy to obtain. All you have to do is print out the form, fill it out with some relevant data, and pay a small fee; you don't even have to go to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). After these quick steps, you will have your own personalized license plate to help your car stand out.

Part 1 of 3. Get a Personalized License Plate Form

Step 1: Visit the South Carolina DMV website.. Visit the South Carolina DMV website in your internet browser to begin the process of obtaining a personalized South Carolina license plate.

Step 2: Find available forms and guides. On the South Carolina DMV website, click the button that says "Forms and Manuals".

Step 3: Access your personalized license plate form. Scroll down the page until you see Form MV-96 titled "Application for Personal License Plates." Click on this form.

Step 4: Print the application. Print this application so that you have a physical copy of it.

Part 2 of 3: Apply for a Personalized South Carolina License Plate.

Step 1: Enter basic information. At the top of the app, there will be a list of standard information such as your name and phone number. Complete all of this information accurately.

Step 4: Determine fees for personalized license plates. At the top of the app is a chart showing how much the fees depend on your vehicle and whether you are a senior citizen. Use this table to determine the amount of the fee you owe and enter that amount in the field under the heading "Total fees included in the application."

Step 5: Enter your car insurance information.. You must provide the name of your insurance company. Enter a name in the Insurance Company Name field, and then sign where prompted.

  • A warning: You can't get a personal license plate if you don't have insurance, and making insurance is a very serious crime.

Step 6: Enter options for your personal license plate. You have three possibilities to enter your personal number plate. If your first choice has already been made, your second choice will be used. If the second option is selected, the third option will be used. If you leave any of the fields in the license plate blank, they will be treated as spaces.
