Laws and Permits for Disabled Drivers in Alaska

Each state has its own specific requirements for disabled drivers. Below are some of the requirements you must meet in the state of Alaska in order to obtain a license plate and/or a disabled driving permit.

How do I know if I am eligible for a disabled driver's license and/or license plate?

You can apply for a disabled driver's license if you cannot walk 200 feet without stopping, you have limited mobility due to the loss of the ability to use one or more lower limbs, you have lost the ability to use one or both hands, one or both hands or use portable oxygen. If you have class III or IV heart failure, or if you have arthritis so severe that it interferes with your ability to walk, you are also eligible for a disabled driver's license and/or license plate.

How do I get a license plate and/or permit?

You must apply for a permit or license in person at your local DMV office in Alaska.

To get a permit or license plate, you need to bring a Special Disability Parking Permit (Form 861) to a qualified healthcare professional who will complete and sign the form. You can submit the form in person to your local Alaska DMV or by mail:

Cost of license plates and permits

Parking permits in Alaska are free. To obtain disability license plates, you must apply to your local Alaska DMV. Be sure to bring one of the following forms with you: If the vehicle is already registered in your name, you must complete a Vehicle Deal Application (Form 821) for a special type of license plate. If the vehicle is new to you, you must complete the Statement of Ownership and Registration (Form 812) and write "Request Special Decals" in the section labeled Affidavit.

License plates are issued only after the DMV of Alaska has reviewed and approved your application, confirming that you meet the standards required for disability status.

How to renew a permit

Disabled drivers will need to renew after five years. To renew, you will need to fill out the document that you filled out when you first applied and pay the required fee. Also note that the time you can extend depends on the first letter of your last name. Be sure to check the schedule so you know which month you can renew your subscription for.

Types of disability plates

Drivers with a permanent disability receive one license plate for each vehicle you own. Any additional plate costs $100 plus any vehicle registration fees.

How to show your disability permit

Permits must be posted so that law enforcement officials can see them. You can hang your permission on your rearview mirror or place it on your dashboard.

Permit expiration date

Temporary permits expire after six months and permanent permits expire after five years.

Transferring license plates from one car to another

Please note that in Alaska, if you are disabled and want to transfer your license plate to another vehicle, you will not be charged. However, in order to transfer license plates from one vehicle to another, both vehicles must be registered in your name.
