How to Transfer Ownership of a Car in Wyoming

The State of Wyoming tracks vehicle ownership by the name on the vehicle's title deed. In the event of a change of ownership, ownership must be transferred to the new owner. This applies to all types of change of ownership, from buying and selling a car to inheriting it or donating/donating a car. However, it only takes a few basic steps to transfer ownership of a car in Wyoming.

Information for buyers

If you are buying a car from a private individual, there are a few things you need to do to ensure that ownership can be transferred to your name. Here they are:

  • Make sure the seller has completed the back of the title, including the section of the affidavit that lists the vehicle's mileage, condition, and purchase price.

  • Make sure the seller signs the title to you.

  • Be sure to get a release from the bond from the seller.

  • Work with the seller to complete the bill of sale.

  • Complete the Title Deed Application and VIN/HIN Verification Form.

  • Have proof that the vehicle passed the VIN check and your identity/state of residence.

  • Bring all of this information to the county clerk's office, along with the transfer of title, fees, and taxes. Please note that each county has different costs.

Common Mistakes

  • Do not get release from arrest
  • Not making sure the seller has filled in all the header information

Information for sellers

As a car seller, you need to follow these steps:

  • Provide the buyer with a completed title deed signed in their name or provide them with an affidavit of ownership.
  • Give the buyer a release from the bond.
  • Be sure to complete the affidavit section on the back of the title.

Common Mistakes

  • Failure to provide information about existing collaterals

Inheritance and donation of a car

If you are gifting or donating your car, the procedure is the same as above. However, be aware that each county in Wyoming has its own unique characteristics, so be sure to check with the county clerk's office before taking any action.

For inherited vehicles, the heir to the estate will need to apply to the clerk's office for a title deed in their name. You will need to bring a death certificate, vehicle ownership, proof of identity and residence, and a statement of ownership. You will also need to pay title fees.
