How to renew your car registration in New York

Current and new New Yorkers must register their vehicles with the New York DMV. Registration is required so that you can drive on the roads of New York without fear of fines. Every year you will have to spend time renewing your registration. If you are a current resident, you will receive a notification in the mail from the New York DMV when your registration is due to be renewed. This means that you will have to make concessions in order to renew your registration as soon as possible. Here is what you will need to do while trying to handle this process:

Take care of it online

When attempting to renew your registration online, you will need to ensure that you have received permission to do so. Usually, the notification you receive will indicate whether you can use this option. Here is what you will need to do if you can renew online:

  • The first thing you need is notification
  • Be sure to get the PIN in the notification
  • Enter your driver's license number
  • Pay the fees you owe

Go in person

The next option you have when trying to renew your registration is to contact the DMV in person. Here's what you'll need to travel to the DMV:

  • Completed application for vehicle registration/ownership
  • A copy of your New York driver's license.
  • Money to pay the fees you owe

Registration renewal fees

Below are the fees you will have to pay when trying to renew your registration:

  • Upgrades for vehicles weighing 1,650 pounds or less will cost $26.
  • Upgrading cars weighing between 1,751 and 1,850 pounds will cost $29.
  • Upgrade costs for vehicles weighing 1,951 pounds or more will range from $32.50 to $71.

Emission test

You will need to pass both an emissions test and an On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) check every 12 months in order to be allowed to renew your registration. For more information about this process, please visit the New York Department of Motor Vehicles website.
