How to clean spark plugs from soot yourself

If carbon deposits form on the spark plugs, this may indicate various problems with the engine:

  • increased oil level in the crankcase;
  • piston rings are worn out and let in a lot of soot and ash;
  • the ignition is incorrectly adjusted.

You can get rid of these problems only after carrying out maintenance at the service station. But if the candles become dirty due to low-quality gasoline or additives, then this will be displayed on the difficult start of the engine and the so-called “triple” - when only three pistons work and vibration is felt.

Spark plugs are not the most expensive spare part, they are consumables and, depending on the operating conditions of the car, they need to be changed after several thousand kilometers. However, if the candles are still functional, then they can simply be cleaned of scale and dirt.

There are several ways to clean candles.

Cleaning candles with kerosene:

  • soak the candles in kerosene (it is advisable to soak only the skirt, but not the ceramic tip) for 30 minutes;
  • all the scale will get wet, and the candle itself will be degreased;
  • you need to clean with a soft brush, for example, a toothbrush, a candle body and an electrode;
  • dry the candle brought to a shine or blow it with a jet of air from the compressor;
  • twist the cleaned candles into the cylinder block and put the high voltage wires on them in the same order as they were.

Ignition at high temperature:

  • heat the electrodes of the candles on fire until all the soot burns out;
  • clean them with a nylon brush.

This method is not the best, since heating affects the quality of the candle.

Sandblasting method

Sandblasting is the process of cleaning a candle with a jet of air containing sand or other abrasive fine particles. Apparatus for sandblasting is available in almost every service station. Sand removes all scale well.

Chemical method:

  • first, candles are degreased in gasoline or kerosene;
  • after wiping and drying, the candles are immersed in a solution of ammonium acetic acid, it is desirable that the solution be heated to high temperatures;
  • after 30 minutes in the solution, the candles are removed, thoroughly wiped and washed in boiling water.

Instead of acetic ammonium, acetone can be used.

The easiest way to clean candles at home is to boil them in ordinary water with the addition of washing powder. The powder will degrease the surface. The remnants of soot are cleaned with an old toothbrush.
