Subaru may not be the best selling cars in the country, but they certainly inspire brand loyalty. Most people who buy a Subaru will definitely do it again the next time they're on the market, and there's a noisy subculture that would never consider any other type of car. Perhaps you are a member of this tribe, which is why you are looking for a job as an automotive technician that specializes specifically in Subaru.

Working on a Subaru is unique because most stores don't have more than one or two of them a month. That's why owners take them to dealerships where they know the mechanics who work there have seen countless models. So if you're looking to join the ranks of these professionals and apply for a Subaru-focused auto mechanic job, it's important that you know what it will take to qualify.

Become a Certified Subaru Dealer

Luckily, Subaru knows how popular their brand is and how many drivers will only take their cars to a technician who is not only experienced but also certified by the company to work on their favorite vehicles. As a result, they created a fairly simple program to get certified to work at Subaru dealerships up to the rank of Master Technician (a great way to earn a much higher auto mechanic salary).

Subaru has partnered with ASE (National Automotive Institute of Excellence) to create their courses. This non-profit organization has been helping mechanics improve their abilities and career prospects since 1972, so you can be sure they know what they're doing.

What's nice about the way Subaru has organized their courses is that you can just apply for testing right from the start. This is great news for those of you who may have worked for Subaru for several years and don't need the extra time and money to train. Just take the tests you are interested in and you will receive a certificate with a passing score.

That being said, if you pass the tests and fail, you will need to complete their courses before you can apply for certification again. Test topics for which you can get certified:

• Gear boxes
• Engines
• Electric equipment
• Fuel systems
• Brake systems

You don't have to take them all at once, or even take them all, period. Just take the quiz on the topics you want to get certified on. Mechanics can always come back later to take other tests.

The tests themselves are held in almost 500 different locations across the country, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding a place to take them. However, you must first register with the Subaru Technical Training Department. Once you do, you have 90 days to sign up for the test and take it.

Each test contains 50 questions. You will be given an hour to answer all of them. This list of ASE testing centers will show you where you can take the test. When you arrive, make sure you bring your government-issued photo ID with you. Although you will be issued a receipt confirming that you passed the test, it may take up to 10 days before you receive a response from Subaru Training about your assessment. Of course, if you fail, you just need to sign up for Subaru Level 2 training and take the test later.

Become a Subaru Master

As we mentioned earlier, if you really want to earn the best possible auto mechanic salary for working at Subaru, we recommend that you set a long-term goal of becoming a Master Technician certified.

To achieve this in-demand status, you will need at least five years of Subaru experience. This is measured from your very first instructor-led technical session. You will then need to complete the Subaru Level 5 training; outside of this requirement there is no testing.

To earn a Master Technician certification, you first need to be certified in the following areas:

• A1 engine repair
• Automatic transmission A2
• Manual transmission and axles A3
• Suspension and steering A4
• A5 Brakes
• A6 Electrical and electronic systems
• A7 Heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems
• A8 engine performance

While it is obvious that a lot of work is required to achieve this level of certification, most of those who have done it will agree that it is definitely worth the benefits in terms of salary and job security. Becoming a Subaru Dealer Certification ensures you can work with your favorite car manufacturer's models for years to come. While it's important that you first make sure there are auto mechanic vacancies for this type of job in your area, if there are any, you shouldn't have much trouble getting hired with this certification on your resume.
