How to Get a Toyota Dealer Certificate

Few car companies can compete with Toyota for brand recognition. In fact, the headquarters of the Japanese manufacturer is located in the city named after him: Toyota, Aichi. Since Kiichiro Toyoda founded the company in 1937, the company has not only created popular cars, but has helped shape an entire industry around the world. Toyota is considered a trendsetter, but also a reputable company known for producing reliable cars, vans, trucks and SUVs.

If your goal is to get a job as an automotive technician, you couldn't do more than focus your attention on Toyota service training. Here are just a few examples of the popular cars it makes:

  • Camry
  • Corolla
  • Tundra
  • Tacoma
  • RAV4

You can't drive a mile down the highway without seeing at least one of them. Year after year, the Toyota Corolla remains the best-selling car worldwide, with other models not far behind in their categories. So if you want to work as a mechanic and stay busy, you should get a Toyota Dealer Certification.

Become a Certified Toyota Dealer

Toyota is investing in ensuring that the countless people across the country who drive their cars don't travel far when they need to be serviced or repaired. That's why they're actively working to make it easy for technicians who want to be certified as a Toyota dealer.

One way Toyota does this is by merging with an organization called the Universal Technical Institute. The company has been in business for several decades and during that time over 200,000 mechanics have benefited from its training method. It's well known in the industry that if you can graduate from UTI with good grades, getting a competitive auto mechanic salary won't be difficult.

The TPAT (Toyota Professional Automotive Technician) training is a manufacturer-specific UTI course. This is a 12 week course that you can take in Sacramento, California, Exton, Pennsylvania, or Lyle, Illinois. The program uses training taken directly from the University of Toyota. As part of T-TEN (Toyota Motor Sales, Technician Training and Education Network), it also serves as a great starting point if you ever want to continue your career towards these vehicles.

TPAT credentials

Through TPAT, you will receive a Toyota Maintenance Certified and receive training in Toyota Express maintenance procedures. Upon graduation, you will receive nine credits in the Toyota University Course of Toyota.

One of the really great benefits of working with Toyota vehicles is that it also applies to Lexus vehicles. This means your knowledge base will cover even more vehicles. The fact that Lexus is one of the most popular luxury car brands in the world will definitely help your auto mechanic salary. At the end of the TPAT, you'll even earn five Lexus-specific credits.

Scion is also a subsidiary of Toyota, so your training will help you work with these vehicles as well. Although they will no longer be produced after 2016, the company has been in business for 13 years; it is safe to assume that you will have the opportunity to work on them in the near future.

All graduates are issued an individual learning identifier Toyota SPIN. You can use this to track your training history and progress across your dealer network. Potential employers can also use it to verify your certification.

Finally, after you have completed the TPAT, you can continue your education by working towards becoming a Toyota Technician Expert. This is only possible after you have met all on-campus and off-campus work requirements and length of stay requirements. However, this is the second tier in the company's dealer network, so the hard work is sure to pay off if you choose to go down this path.

TPAT Curriculum

If you're interested in TPAT, here's what the curriculum looks like:

  • Section 1. Here you will learn about the corporate culture of Toyota and the vehicles they manufacture. Electrical diagnostic tools and electrical schematics will be used to analyze various types of electrical circuit problems.

  • Section 2. You will learn general Toyota Hybrid maintenance procedures, including safety and repair protocols.

  • Section 3. You'll get under the car to learn about power steering issues, how to check suspension components, camber problems, and more.

  • Section 4. In this last section, the instructors will show you how to perform Toyota Express maintenance procedures. This will include multi-point checks, vehicle maintenance and security checks. ASE certification preparation and training will also be the topic of this section.

Toyota remains one of the most popular car manufacturers worldwide and their focus on innovation suggests that this will not change in our lifetime. If you want to access more auto mechanic jobs, becoming a Toyota Dealer Certification will make a huge difference.
