How to Get the A5 ASE Study Guide and Practice Test
Getting certified in your area of specialization is one of the best things you can do for your mechanic career. Not only does this increase your potential lifetime earnings, but it also makes you more attractive when looking for a job as an auto mechanic. Both of these benefits make it a very wise move to prepare for and pass the Automotive Service Excellence exams.
There are over 40 Master Technician certifications from the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (NIASE or ASE). The A Series is made up of nine different fields, and you must complete levels A1-A8 (in addition to at least two years of relevant work experience) to qualify as a Master Technician. Exam A5 covers brakes.

NIASE provides free study materials for all of its exams. You can download the study guide for the entire A1-A9 series for free, either from the certification test home page or from the Test Prep & Training page.
While the institute also provides practice tests on all topics, they are not free. They cost $14.95 for the first two and go down in price as you buy more. ASE practice tests work on a voucher system - you buy vouchers, which then give you a code that you use for any test you need.
Vouchers are valid up to 60 days. Keep in mind that entering a new voucher code on the same practice test will not change the test - there is only one version for each area of study.
Official ASE practice tests are half as long as real tests. After you pass the A5 practice test, you will receive a progress report that explains the questions you answered correctly and incorrectly.
Third Party Sites
While looking for A4 ASE study materials, you have probably come across third-party websites that offer preparation help or practice tests. NIASE recommends a multifaceted approach to exam preparation; however, you want to do your research to make sure you are working with a reputable company that will provide you with accurate and complete information.
Passing the test
The Institute has discontinued all written tests in favor of computer-assisted examinations. Testing is available all year round and you can choose the days and times that are convenient for you, including weekend testing times. One of the main advantages of this computerized testing is that you will be able to know immediately how you performed on the exam.
The A5 ASE test consists of 45 multiple-choice questions plus additional ungraded questions that are used for statistical data only. There is nothing on the test to indicate which 45 questions will count, so try to answer each one.
