How to Get Certified in California Smog

If you are looking for a way to make yourself more marketable in your auto mechanic career, you may want to consider becoming a smog specialist certification. Having these extra credentials can help you get a better auto mechanic job and increase your salary.

Two-thirds of the states require some sort of emission testing to reduce the amount of pollutants emitted by vehicles into the air. Each state has different qualification requirements for emissions testing and repairs, with California having some of the most stringent requirements.

A California Certified Smog Control Inspector is authorized to conduct vehicle inspections and issue certificates to those who pass the inspection. The requirements for obtaining this license include one of the following:

  • Hold ASE A6, A8, and L1 certifications, complete Level 2 smog training, and pass a state exam within the last two years.

  • Have an AA/AS degree or certification in automotive technology, plus one year of work experience, and have completed Level 2 smog testing training and passed a state exam within the last two years.

  • Complete BAR (Automotive Repair Bureau) diagnostic and repair training and have two years of experience.

  • Complete Engine and Emission Control Level 1 (68 hours) and Smog Check Level 2 (28 hours) and pass the State Licensing Exam within the last two years.

The Smog Technician Certification is the fastest license available for California smog certification.

Earning the title of Smog Repairman entitles you to fix emissions related issues on vehicles that have not passed the smog test. However, if you want to conduct inspections and issue certificates, you will also need to obtain a smog inspector license.

You can be licensed as a smog check repairman if you meet one of the following criteria:

  • Have A6, A8 and L1 ASE certifications and pass the Licensing Exam

  • Have an AA or AS or higher degree in automotive engineering, have at least one year of engine experience, and have passed a state exam.

  • Have an automotive engineering certificate from an accredited school, a minimum of 720 hours of coursework, including at least 280 hours of coursework related to engine performance, and pass the state licensing exam.

  • Complete a BAR-specified 72-hour diagnostic and repair training course within the last five years and pass the State Licensing Exam.

The Diagnostics and Repair training includes all three ASE options for A6, A8 and L1 certifications. It is important to note that ASE certifications in these areas cannot be mixed and matched with alternative ASE courses. You must pass all three official certifications or all three alternatives.

Where can I get training

There are many colleges and automotive schools throughout the state that offer essential smog inspector courses and smog repair courses. Just search the web for your region and find the one that best suits your situation. Some schools offer Smog Specialist certification in as little as one year.

How to Apply for a Certification as a Candidate

The Automotive Repair Bureau is the governing body responsible for determining eligibility for the smog technique exams. You can find the application online here. Complete and submit the application along with the $20 fee and then wait for notification of your eligibility. Once you are approved, you will receive a notification on how to schedule an exam with PSI (the company that administers the exams).

How to renew a specialist license

When it comes time to renew your smog license, you will need to complete the Technician Refresh Course (16 hours) to keep up to date with the latest methods and technologies. The renewal course is available from many institutions, including those that offer original training courses.

The California Smog Check Inspector and Smog Check Repair Technician certification offers mechanics the opportunity to expand their skill set and increase auto mechanic salaries. Although the California requirements for these licenses are quite strict, it is worth making the effort to maximize your career potential.
