How to Get the L2 ASE Study Guide and Practice Test
When you first start your career as a mechanic, it doesn't take long to realize that the best way to get a good auto mechanic job is to become a master mechanic. Earning an ASE certification can increase your earning potential and make you more attractive to employers. You will need at least two years of experience at first, but the extra effort is well worth it.
The National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence, or NIASE, is the governing body that tests and certifies mechanics to formally certify their skill level. There are over 40 areas of certification, including L2, which is the test to become a diesel engine electronic diagnostic specialist. To earn this designation, you must first pass one of the ASE diesel engine tests - A9, H2, S2, or T2, and an electrical/electronic systems test - A6, H6, S6, or T6.

The NIASE website is an excellent resource for preparing for the L2 exam. Free tutorials for each area of expertise are available on the Test Prep & Training page. To properly prepare, you will also need to download the Type 2 Medium Compound Vehicle Handbook, which is a study guide to be used before and during the test. This booklet contains information about the composite diesel engine that is referenced in the exam questions.
The L2 practice test is also available on the website in addition to versions for each individual certification. They operate on a voucher system where you buy vouchers which give you a code and then you use the code to access any practice test you need. Vouchers cost $14.95 each for the first one or two, $12.95 each if you buy three to 24, and $11.95 each for 25 or more.
The practice version is half the length of the real test, and when you're done, you'll get a progress report showing which questions you answered correctly and which didn't. Looking through these reviews should help you understand what specific areas you need to explore further.

When you are looking for ways to get an L2 tutorial and practice test, you will quickly realize that there are many after sales resources available. It can be difficult to figure out which ones are useful and which are not, so be sure to read the reviews. ASE does not endorse or review these programs, however they maintain a list of companies on their website for informational purposes. Review your options carefully to make sure you are getting a reputable program with accurate study information.
Passing the test
When you're ready to take the real test, there are plenty of planning options. Testing is available 12 months a year, as well as on weekends. NIASE provides information on its website for finding a test site and exam day schedule. All tests are done on a computer and there is even a demo on the website so you can get comfortable with the format before the scheduled day.
The L2 Advanced Engine Performance Specialist test contains 45 multiple-choice questions plus an additional 10 or more questions that are used for statistical data only. Ungraded questions are not marked as such, so you won't know which questions count and which don't. You will need to answer each question to the best of your knowledge.
NIASE recommends that you do not schedule any other tests for the day you take L2 due to the complexity of the topic. As long as you use the study guides and practice tests and work hard to prepare for the big day, you can earn L2 Master Technician status.
