How to Get a Minnesota Driver's License

Minnesota uses a certified driver's license program, as do many other states. This program requires all new drivers under the age of 18 to begin supervised driving in order to practice safe driving prior to obtaining a full driver's license. To get a student's initial permission, you must follow certain steps. Here is a simple guide to getting a driver's license in Minnesota:

Study permit

To apply for a Minnesota training permit, a resident must be at least 15 years of age and must have completed a driving education program that includes both 30 hours of classroom instruction and at least six hours of practical instruction. This permit must be used for a minimum of six months before a driver of at least 16 years of age can take a road test for the next license.

All driving with a training permit must be supervised by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years of age. During this time, the supervising driver must complete a total of 50 hours of driving, 15 of which are at night. If the guardian who oversees this watch completes the 90-minute Parent Information Course, the required amount of recorded driving practice is reduced to 40 hours. These hours must be registered in a signed controlled driving log provided by the State of Minnesota.

How to apply

The first step in applying for a Minnesota driver's license is to take a written exam at an official testing location. To do this, drivers must provide the following documents to the local traffic police department:

  • Two identification documents, such as a birth certificate, US passport, or school ID.

  • Driver Education Blue Card, which is a certificate of completion of a mandatory driver training course.

After passing the written exam, drivers will go to the license office and must submit the following documents:

  • Written Exam Confirmation

  • A completed application with a notarized signature of a parent or guardian.

  • Study Permit Fee of $14.25.

Exam

The Minnesota Student Permit Exam is taken on paper at most locations and on computers at some locations. The exam covers all state traffic laws, road signs, and other driver safety information. The Minnesota Driver's Guide has all the information you need to pass the exam. To get extra practice and build confidence before taking the exam, there are many online tests available. The exam consists of 40 questions and drivers must answer at least 32 correctly in order to pass the exam.

In addition to paying a fee, all drivers will be required to pass a vision test before obtaining a learner's license. The permit exam can only be taken once a day and the first two tests are covered by the initial fee. If a student is required to take a test after the first two attempts, a fee of $10 will be charged for each additional attempt.
