How to Get a Nebraska Driver's License

Nebraska has a detailed driver's license program that requires the participation of all teen drivers in order to drive legally. To obtain any of the various student permissions, you must follow certain steps. Here is a simple guide to obtaining a study permit in Nebraska:

Student Permissions

Nebraska has a total of four different types of student permits that a teenage resident can apply for. The first is called the School Permit, or LPE. This allows students aged at least 14 but under 16 to practice driving with a driver's license that is at least 21 years old. This permit is valid for three months and requires a written exam and an eye test.

The second is called School Permit or SCP. To obtain this type of permit, a driver must have had an LPE for at least two months, must be at least 14 years and two months old, and must reside at least 1 mile or more from the school they attend. This person may travel unsupervised to and from school, and to another location with a supervisor. This permit requires a state-approved safety course, a written exam, and a driving test.

The third is called the Student Permit or LPD, which is closest to the other state version of the student permit. Students must be at least 15 years of age and must pass a written exam as well as a vision exam to receive LPD. They must be supervised by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years of age. This permit is valid for one year.

The final type of driver's license in Nebraska is the Operator's Provisional Permit, or POP. This is the last limited license and is issued to drivers aged 16 or over who have held any of the previous permits for at least six months. This permit is valid until the driver reaches the age of 18 and allows the driver to drive unsupervised from 6 am to midnight. To obtain this permit, drivers must either complete a driving safety course or provide a form signed by a licensed guardian stating that the driver has completed 50 hours of driving practice, including ten hours after dark.

How to Apply for a Student Permit

To apply for these permits, applicants must pass at least a written test of driving skills. To take this test, drivers must submit the following documents to their local DMV office:

  • Identification card, such as a passport or government-issued ID.

  • Two proof of residence, such as a bank statement or account.

  • Proof of a social security number, such as a social security card or Form W-2.

In addition, all drivers must pass a vision test and pay a $10.50 student permit fee. POP applicants may opt out of the written exam if their LPE, SCP, or LPD has not expired for more than a year.

Passing the written exam

The driver's license exam for each Nebraska student is slightly different, but covers all traffic laws, road signs, and other state-specific driver safety information. The Nebraska Driver's Guide has all the information you need to pass the exam. To get extra practice before taking the exam, the State of Nebraska conducts a mock exam that includes all the information you need to pass.
