How to Get a Maine Driver's License

To begin driving on Maine roads, anyone under the age of 21 must obtain a driver's license, which begins with student permission. This driver's license allows persons over the age of 15 to start supervised driving in order to practice safe driving before obtaining a full driver's license. In order to obtain this permission, you must follow certain steps. Here is a simple guide to getting a Maine driver's license:

Student permission

A Maine Learner's License is a learner's license that allows anyone over the age of 14 to legally drive a vehicle. When a driver has a permit for at least six months and is at least 16 years old, they can apply for a standard driver's license.

When driving with a study permit in Maine, drivers must be accompanied by an adult who:

  • At least 20 years old

  • Driving license for at least two years

While driving during the learning period, parents or legal guardians must use the Parental Supervised Driving Program Guide provided to them by the State BMV to record the required 70 hours of driving practice that the teen will need to apply for their standard driver's license. At least ten of those hours of driving must have been overnight.

How to apply

There are two ways to apply for a Maine driver's license. All drivers under the age of 18 are required to take a driving course. After the driver completes the course, they can apply for a learner's permit by mail. The following items must be included:

  • A completed application signed by the parent.

  • $10 check or money order payable to "Secretary of State".

  • Original birth certificate (will be returned)

  • Driver training course completion certificate

Drivers over 18 do not need a driving license. In this case, the driver must appear in person at the BMV and pass both a written exam and an eye test (both part of the standard driver training course). Here are the items you need to bring to the exam:

  • Completed application

  • Proof of residence in Maine and legal presence in the United States.

  • Original birth certificate

  • $10 check or money order payable to "Secretary of State".

Exam

The Maine Learner's License Exam consists of questions about state-specific traffic laws, safe driving rules, and traffic signs. Maine focuses on the laws regarding drunk driving in the written exam. The Maine Motorist's Handbook and study guide contains all the information you need to pass the test. To get extra practice and build confidence before taking the exam, there are many online tests available.
