How to get a driver's license in New Jersey

New Jersey, like many other states, has a certified driver's license program. This program requires all new drivers under the age of 18 to begin supervised driving in order to practice safe driving prior to obtaining a full driver's license. To get a student's initial permission, you must follow certain steps. Here is a simple guide to getting a driver's license in New Jersey:

Student permission

There are two types of student permits in New Jersey: The Student-Student Permit is for drivers 16 years of age. The Exam Permit is for drivers over 17 years of age. Each permit is valid for two years and comes with its own set of restrictions.

The "student ID" requires drivers to be accompanied at all times by a driver who is at least 21 years of age and has at least three years of driving experience. With this permit, drivers cannot drive after 11:5 am or before XNUMX:XNUMX pm. A maximum of one passenger may travel with a student driver unless a parent or legal guardian is present. This permission must be held for a minimum of six months before the student can advance to the next level.

When a driver is 17 years of age and has had a "Learning Permit" for at least six months, they can apply for a "Permit to Take the Exam". This permit can also be missed if the 17-year-old has not obtained a "Learning Permit". To apply for this permit, the driver must pass a written exam. This permit must be obtained at least six months before applying for the next level and is valid for two years. The same supervision and curfew restrictions as in the Student Permit apply to the Student Exam Permit.

Required documents

To apply for a "Learner's Permit" or "Exam Student's Permit", the driver must bring the following documents to MVC when taking the written exam:

  • Primary identification, such as a passport or birth certificate.

  • Certificate of enrollment in a driving course (student permit only)

  • Signed consent form from legal guardian (student permit only)

They must also pay a $10 permit fee.

Exam

The New Jersey Driver's License Exam can be taken at any MVC Driver Testing Center in New Jersey. It has 50 questions, and 80% must be answered correctly in order for the driver to pass. The exam covers all state traffic laws, road signs, and other driver safety information. The New Jersey Driver's Guide has all the information you need to pass the test. To get extra practice and build confidence before taking the exam, the state offers an online practice test.

In addition to paying a fee and passing an exam, all drivers will be required to pass a vision test before obtaining a student's permit.
