How to Get a Michigan Driver's License

Michigan's graduated driver's license program requires all new drivers under the age of 18 to begin driving under supervision to practice safe driving prior to obtaining a full driver's license. To get a student's initial permission, you must follow certain steps. Here is a simple guide to getting a driver's license in Michigan:

Student permission

Michigan has a tiered driver's license which is divided into two stages. The Level 1 Learner License allows Michigan residents aged 14 years and 9 months to apply for a permit. This driver must complete "Segment 1" of a state-approved driver training program. The Intermediate Level 2 license is for drivers who are at least 16 years old and have held a Level 1 learner license for at least six months. This driver must also complete "Segment 2" of a government-approved driver training course. A Level 2 permit must be held for at least six months before a 17-year-old driver can apply for a full license.

A Level 1 learner license requires the driver to be accompanied at all times by a licensed adult who is at least 21 years of age. Under a Level 2 license, a teenager may drive unsupervised from 5 am to 10 pm unless traveling to or from school, playing sports, engaging in religious activities or working, and accompanied by a supervising adult.

While driving during the training period, parents or legal guardians must register the required 50 hours of driving practice that the teen will need to apply for a Level 2 driver's license. At least ten of those driving hours must be overnight.

How to apply

To apply for a Michigan Level 1 Learner License, drivers must submit the following documents to their local SOS office:

  • Certificate of completion of the driver training course "Segment 1"

  • Proof of identity, such as a birth certificate or school ID

  • Proof of a social security number, such as a social security card or Form W-2.

  • Two proof of residence in Michigan, such as a pay stub or a school report card.

Exam

A written exam is not required to obtain a Level 1 Learner's License. However, those who are new to the state or who are advancing to the next level in the licensing program must pass a proficiency test that covers state traffic laws, safe driving regulations, and road signs. The Michigan Driving Guide has all the information you need to pass the test. To get extra practice and build confidence before taking the exam, there are many online tests, including those with temporary versions.

The exam consists of 40 questions and includes a $25 fee. If the permit needs to be replaced at any time, SOS requires you to pay a $9 duplicate permit fee and you will need to bring the same set of legally required documents listed above.
