How to get a driver's license in Oklahoma

Oklahoma has a phased licensing program that requires all new drivers under the age of 18 to begin driving under supervision to practice safe driving before being granted a full driver's license. To get a student's initial permission, you must follow certain steps. Here is a simple guide to getting a driver's license in Oklahoma:

Student permission

Any teenager who is at least 15 years of age can begin the Oklahoma Study Permit process. There are certain restrictions for each age group:

  • A 15 year old can practice driving while enrolled in a driver training program.

  • A person aged 15 years and 6 months may apply for a Learner's Permit if they have completed or are currently enrolled in a driving education program.

  • Anyone between the ages of 16 and 18 can apply for a driver's license without taking a driving course.

Drivers with a learner's license may only drive under the supervision of an adult who is at least 21 years old and has had a license for at least two years. This supervisor must be in the front passenger seat at all times while the student driver is driving the vehicle. While driving during the training period, parents or legal guardians must register the required 50 hours of driving practice required to apply for their full driver's license, which includes at least ten hours of driving at night.

Drivers who are at least 16 years of age, have held a learner's permit for at least six months, and have completed the required number of supervised hours may apply for a further license.

How to apply

To apply for a student permit in Oklahoma, a driver must pass a written exam, pass a vision test, and submit the following documents to the BMV office:

  • Primary identification, such as a birth certificate or a valid U.S. passport.

  • Additional proof of identification, such as a health insurance card or employer ID with a photo from Oklahoma.

  • Social Security Number Confirmation

  • Proof of enrollment or completion of a driver training program where required.

  • Certificate of Enrollment and School Attendance or School Leaving Certificate

  • Proof of legal name change, where applicable

In addition, drivers must pay a $4 Permit Application Fee and a $33.50 License Fee to obtain a student permit. If an exam needs to be retaken due to failing the exam on the first try, the driver must pay an additional one-time fee of $4. A parent or legal guardian must be present for the written test for any driver under the age of 18.

Exam

The written exam that a driver must pass covers state-specific traffic laws, safe driving rules, and traffic signs. The Oklahoma Driving Guide has all the information you need to pass the exam. To get extra practice and build confidence before taking the exam, there are several types of online practice exams that can be taken as many times as needed to study the information.
