How to get a driver's license in New Hampshire

New Hampshire is one of the few states that does not have a certified driver's license program. The DMV does not issue study permits in the state. The state of New Hampshire allows anyone over the age of 15 and a half to practice driving as long as they comply with certain restrictions. Once the driver feels ready, they can take the driver's license test and become a fully licensed driver.

Driving restrictions

For legal driving, there are certain restrictions that a driver without a license must follow. The driver must be at least 15 years and 6 months old. They may only drive a non-commercial vehicle and must be accompanied by either a legal guardian or a driver with a license at least 25 years of age. This person will be responsible for any damage or violations that are committed by the driver. The driver must always carry a document confirming his age while driving.

During practice, the driver must complete 40 hours of supervised driving, which must be tracked using the Driver's Extracurricular Activity Log. At least 10 of the required 40 hours must be completed at night. These hours are in addition to the mandatory driver training course.

Driver education requirements

Before anyone under the age of 18 can apply for a driver's license, they must complete a New Hampshire-approved driving course. This course must include at least six hours of laboratory observation, at least 30 hours of classroom instruction, and at least ten hours of driving practice. Upon completion of the course, a certificate of completion will be issued, which must be submitted to the DMV to apply for a driver's license.

Driver's license

After meeting the above requirements, a New Hampshire driver can apply for an adult driver's license if they are over 21 or a youth driver's license if they are under 21. The youth driver's license allows the driver to drive the vehicle at any time except for the period from 1:4 am to XNUMX:XNUMX pm. To apply for this license, drivers must submit the following documents to the DMV:

  • Completed application

  • Two proof of identity, such as a birth certificate or a valid passport.

  • A certificate of completion of a driving training course, as well as a "Driving Sheet" signed by the legal guardian.

Drivers must pass a written knowledge exam, road test, vision test and pay a $50 fee.

Passing the written exam

The New Hampshire Driver's License Exam covers all state traffic laws, road signs, and other driver safety information. The New Hampshire Driver's Guide, which can be viewed and downloaded online, contains all the information you need to pass the exam. To get extra practice and build confidence before taking the exam, there are many practice tests available online.
