How to Get a Utah Driver's License

Utah is a state that relies on a certified driver's license program to keep young drivers safe. This program requires all new drivers to start driving with a driver's license in order to practice safe driving under supervision before obtaining their full driver's license. To get a student's initial permission, you must follow certain steps. Here is a simple guide to getting a study permit in Utah:

Student permission

There are two types of student permits in Utah. The first is for drivers aged 15 to 17. These drivers must pass a written permit test in order to obtain a student permit. With a learner's license, these drivers must also complete a driving course, a driving skills test and 40 hours of driving practice under the supervision of a parent or legal guardian, of which XNUMX hours are overnight.

The second type of learner's license is for drivers over 18 years of age. This driver must pass a written exam in order to obtain a permit and must complete a driver training course and pass a driving skills test while holding the permit.

Once a driver has met the requirements of their specific student permit, they can apply for a full driver's license. Although a 15-year-old may apply for a learner's permit, which allows them to take driving lessons, they cannot begin their practice of driving with a permit until they are 16 years old.

When driving with any training license, drivers must always be accompanied by a driver who is at least 21 years old and has a valid driver's license.

How to apply

To apply for a student permit in Utah, a driver must bring the following documents to the DPS office when taking the written exam:

  • Completed application

  • Parent or guardian who must personally sign the financial responsibility

  • Proof of identity and date of birth, such as a birth certificate or a valid passport.

  • Proof of a social security number, such as a social security card or Form W-2.

  • Two proof of residence in Utah, such as a student ID card or report card.

They must also undergo an eye test, complete a medical questionnaire, and pay the required $15 fee.

Exam

Those who apply for a learner's permit must pass a written exam that covers all state-specific traffic laws, road signs, and other driver safety information. Utah DPS provides a driver's manual that contains all the information you need to pass the written test. The state also provides an online practice exam that prospective drivers can use to gain the practice and confidence they need to pass the exam.

Drivers may attempt to take the written exam twice a day. If a driver fails the exam three times, they must pay the $5 fee again.
