How to build an earth rammed wall?
Content
Step 1 - Create a StructureAssemble the frame, usually consisting of wooden side panels and supports. The height will depend on what size wall you are building. The width should be measured from the inside of the frame and will be the width of your wall. Typically, rammed earth walls are 300–360 mm (12–14 in) thick. Building a house will still require a concrete base ready for the floor, but if you're building a barn or wall, a solid, flat base (or even a thin layer of rammed earth) will suffice.
Step 2 - Add the first layerBackfill the structure with the first layer of damp earth. It should be about 150-200mm (6-8″) deep. Wet ground = mixture of sand, gravel, clay and concrete.
Step 3 - Use an earth rammerCompact the damp soil with a hand or power rammer.
Step 4 - Add the next layerAdd another layer of damp earth and tamp down again.
Step 5 - Continue to the top of the frameworkContinue until the layers of compacted earth reach the top of the frame.
Step 6 - Remove FrameworkAfter an hour, remove the frame, leaving a compacted earth shaft. Now it should be pretty solid. The wall will continue to harden until it is as hard and strong as a concrete wall. |
