How to lay a patio or lay paving slabs?

Step 1 - Lay outMark out the dimensions of the patio with wooden pegs and string. | ||||
Step 2 - Excavate the siteDig an area deepening about 15 cm (6 inches). | ||||
Step 3 - Mark with wooden stakesDrive wooden stakes around the base, making sure they are all level. This will be the marker for your base layer. The stakes should be about 8 cm (3 inches) high. | ||||
Step 4 - Add a Base LayerUse a base layer of damp soil, rock, sand, etc. to create a compactable mixture, then spread it evenly over the area to the height of your 3" wood pegs. Compact the soil evenly using a hand or power rammer. | ||||
Step 5 - Add Water MixLay the water mixture on compacted soil. Your water mix will be a mixture of sand and cement. As you progress, lay the paving slabs on top of the water mixture, constantly checking for evenness with a spirit level. Use a rubber mallet to secure. | ||||
Leave for 24 hours, then use a drier form of water mix to fill the joints (gaps between paving slabs). | ||||
Step 6 - Leave for 24 hours.Leave for another 24 hours for the plates to fully set in place. | ||||
Your patio is ready to use! | ||||
