How to extend the life of car switches

Every function in your car is controlled by a switch or button. Most of them, such as power windows and power door locks, are actively controlled at the push of a button. Systems that are actively monitored include:

  • Rear window defogger
  • Headlamps
  • Cruise control
  • Seat heating switches
  • Radio power, station selection, volume and more

Even if your vehicle's accessories are not actively controlled by the switch, they are passively controlled. The ignition switch supplies power to components that are on all the time when the ignition is on, such as the speedometer.

There is no exact number of button presses you will receive before the switch fails. Switches can fail at any time because they are electrical components. There are electrical contacts inside a button or switch that can be very fragile. While excessive pressure or frequent use will eventually cause them to fail, switches can still fail even with careful and infrequent use.

There are several steps you can take to ensure your car's breakers last as long as possible;

Water can and will corrode electrical components, so if you spill something on a switch or leave a window open in the rain, try to dry the switches as best you can. Use a small can of compressed air to blow the switches dry if you have one.

Use control buttons sparingly

Avoid unnecessary switch presses whenever possible. For example, unnecessarily pressing the power window button not only places stress on the power window motor itself, but also increases the likelihood of switch failure. You can also enable child lock on the driver's controls to prevent undue stress on the rear seat switches and motors.

Use car switches carefully

If the button doesn't move freely where it should, don't force it. It is possible that something sticky or a small object is preventing the switch from moving properly, and pushing harder or carelessly can damage the switch. Clean the switch with an electrical contact cleaner and make sure it is not blocked by any object.
